It would also be good to note that it also matters where you draft those specific players as well. If you drafted Billy Hamilton in round 6/7 (Avg ADP last year) you were hurting your team more than helping it. Here is an article on Hamilton that I want everyone who plays fantasy baseball to read... Do yourself a favor and draft someone in the 6th round actually worth a 6th round pick who has a combination of speed/avg and target someone like Ben Revere 4 rounds later for the additional speed.
I don't think anyone is arguing that Hamilton will be a drain on your average. He absolutely will most likely have nothing higher than a .260 ceiling for his career. However, if he keeps an OBP enough to stay in the lead off he is going to help with runs and single handedly carry a team in steals (which he worked on with DeShields this year), which gives you a lot of flexibility on how to construct your roster if you so desire to is all I'm saying. Now I doubt I end up with him since I won't pay his 3rd/4th round ticket. And every other owner is likely to target Ben Revere later in the draft for steals. To go in and bank on getting him might be short sighted.
I started out playing points leagues and I am beginning to hate it for the same reasons you guys mentioned... Based purely on luck of that specific day/week.
I think the league I am in this year is doing that. Looking at the pre draft rankings, I quickly realized how important pitching is to that format. So you can bet I will be spending my first few picks on the top pitchers.
I created rankings and projected point totals for the players using our leagues scoring system... Goes to show how valuable pitching is. 4 of 20 top projected points totals are pitchers. Clayton Kershaw, LAD*SP Felix Hernandez, Sea*SP Chris Sale, CWS*SP**DTD Stephen Strasburg, Wsh*SP Max Scherzer, Wsh*SP David Price, Det*SP Madison Bumgarner, SF*SP Johnny Cueto, Cin*SP Mike Trout, LAA*OF Corey Kluber, Cle*SP Greg Holland, KC*RP Zack Greinke, LAD*SP Cole Hamels, Phi*SP Aroldis Chapman, Cin*RP Craig Kimbrel, Atl*RP Paul Goldschmidt, Ari*1B Jordan Zimmermann, Wsh*SP Andrew McCutchen, Pit*OF Jon Lester, ChC*SP Jose Bautista, Tor*OF
I've won my division 3 out of 4 years so as a bit of advice if you're just starting, it is good to get one or two pitchers in the top 15, and then 2 in the next tier or two. So basically the next 15. And although the pitching is worth a lot, getting big bats plays a huge part. A HR works out to be 6 points in my league (4 for the homer, 1 for R, 1 for RBI) so keep that in mind when figuring out your projections
I draft differently when playing roto as well - Have been doing mocks where I draft an ace in the first 3 rounds, and then I'll wait 5/6 round to draft another pitcher. Pitching is so deep this year you can afford to wait and stock up on quality hitters.
I did a few mocks where I waited til the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th rounds before I took a SP (took a closer in one or two before I took a SP I think) and really didn't feel any worse for the wear. Things definitely have to fall right for that to happen, and obviously you really have to load up after that but it definitely seems do-able in a roto league. Especially if you get some high-k-rate rp's to fill in the back of your roster
I would never do this... But it gives you an interesting perspective on waiting to draft pitchers. He waited until round 14 to draft his pitchers. http://www.fantasyalarm.com/articles/flowers/20038/mock-draft-waiting-on-pitching/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A taste of the future for the Cubs... Soler, Baez, and Kris Bryant just hit back, to back, to back homers.
They definitely have a good problem to have with the log jam of top prospects. Baez contact rate is worrisome for them, but with Addison Russell still waiting, they will be ok if he busts.
That's the double blow right there (in fantasy and real life). Stroman was set up to do big things this year, and was flying up draft boards almost the point he wasn't a sleeper anymore. I was excited about Sanchez profile as a closer, but as 5th starter he's just kind of ehh to me. Either way it's a blow, I think that definitely brings them closer to the pack, but I still like Hutchinson in that group of starters. Maybe the Jays go out and sign Soriano to fill the closer role now, and keep Cecil in a LH setup spot.
I had him in almost every one of my fantasy keeper leagues... Such a big loss. He was poised to have a breakout year. Hate to see this stuff happen. It's been a tough spring on pitchers. Anyone want to place bets on whose arm will fall off next? I'm going Tanaka.
Only a few more days til the regular season gets underway! My jays have been looking pretty decent this spring. Hutchison gets the start on the mound to start the new season. I hope he's gunna have a good yr. he's a solid pitcher for how young he is. Go bluejays!!
Twins and Cubs will be 500 or better this year. Can't wait to head to Target Field to watch a day game.
Don't see how Twins will be above 500. The Central is too tough and they're going to get beat up Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
