Hey guys! I'm curious is anyone has hunted dresser island, or any other public ground located around St. Charles. I'm tired of driving (and spending on gas) 2 hours to hunt. I thought I might try one of the public areas around here. I'd like to get info on each place before I just trek out there. I wish I was out right now. Cold, drizzle, overcast. I bet it was a nice day. Too bad I couldn't get myself to drive 4 hour roundtrip again today. I'd also be interested in a pay as you go kind of lease, if anyone knows of some ground in St Charles county. Thanks for your imput!

Man if you have a boat I'd head out west to Truman Lake and hunt there. If I had the time or money I'd just take you out there and hunt together. Ton's of deer everywhere, especially if you have a boat to get into the rear of the public hunting areas. I shot a nice 13 pointer there a few years back on my 1st sit (on the ground with no blind). And continued to have deer all around me well into the evening.

I don't have a boat, but that is just as far as where I hunt now (first map was screwy). I was looking for somewhere closer to where I live. Dresser island looks like I can access it from land. Who knows...

Check out St. Stanislaous (sp) Park off of Charbonier Rd in St Louis Co.

Also might look into Marias Temp Clair (Agian Sp) in St Charles County. I've never hunted them but I know there are great deer in both places.

Marias temps clair is a managed hunt. St. Stanislaous isn't, and is 30 min from me. Thank you, I will have to take a look. Though it does have it labeled as "fair" population, as compared to "good" in many places.

So how would you go about hunting this. There are woods to the east on the upper right, that you can't really see. The property line (MDC CA) is where the red is. No access to islands (no boat). Obviously scouting is needed, but if you were just going to go out and sit where would you pick.

Be prepared for a bunch of pressure anywhere in that area. If you have google earth, download the MDC file that shows all of the borders of MDC owned ground on it. It's really helpfull.

    Hunting land

Did you try Logan? When I left the woods I have been hunting, I was informed they were selling the land, so after Wednesday I'm with out anywhere to hunt. Some one told me to try Logan and Howell island. If you have boat we could do cuiver island

Don't trust the "fair" or "good" designations... I'm not sure who labels those on the MDC site, but they had "good" on Ted Shanks CA where a couple buddies and I went up in Pike County a month or so ago... and it SUCKED.

Four days hunting between three of us, and one saw a four-pointer and I shot the only deer I saw the whole time frame, a doe fawn that approached on the last morning of our hunt. "Good" my butt...

I used to duck hunt on Dresser Island. Quite a few waterfowl hunters there. It is kind of an overflow spot for folks who don't draw a pill at Marais Temps Claire. Not where I would be bowhunting but honestly I haven't scouted. I just know it from my old duckhunting days.
