I made a huge mistake tonight and was wondering how spooked this buck is. I had this big buck come in and when I first saw him he was at 40 yards coming from a corn field into the woods I was in. I saw him make a scrape and he started to make his way threw the thick patch of trees he was in.He was going toward an opening and when I ranged that opening it was 45 yards. My adrenaline was really pumping and for whatever reason I don't know why i did it but I put my one pin adjustable sight to 40 yards. When I stopped him and shot I shot just barely below him. He trotted 10 yards, stopped and looked back. I did a soft grunt, he took a few steps in my direction with his tail up Alittle but and then decided to slowly walk away. I was and still am sick to my stomach on what happened. I have been waiting years for this opportunity to happen. I was wondering exactly how spooked is this buck? I'd greatly appreciated it.

Doesn't sound too spooked. You may want to consider changing trees though, just in case he made you.

He might not be back in that area for awhile, but chances are good that he'll be back. Take it in stride..you'll get him next time

Thanks I appreciate it. I was thinking the same thing that he wasn't to spooked and could possibly come back. Hopefullyi can get another chance at him.

A clean miss is better than a bad hit.

Well you cleanly missed him so you've got another chance...may be a good idea to move to a different tree as said before and give that area a rest for a little while

Doesn't sound too spooked. Depending on the rut timing in your area, he might not let it bother his patterns too much. He'll have other priorities on his mind.

I once missed the same buck two days in a row. Just missed the first time... hit a limb the second time. The third time... I shot a different buck... then I heard a noise right behind me... yep... it was him. Never saw him again after that.

He'll be back. I got lucky two years ago and missed a nice 8 point at 40 yards, shot under him. He jumped but went on walking. He walked outta sight and about 10 minutes later came back in a gave me a 30 yard shot. I got lucky I think,

Reminds me of the time I over shot a buck while stalking. The giant didn't even notice and was about to give me a second chance when a doe near him pick up my scent and they all raced into the woodline. Was so upset and still think about that day all the time. Was my first year bow hunting with a borrowed bow.

I'd take a clean miss any day
He probably just thought it was a stick or something
    Go get him

If you had a single-ping adjustable sight, why did you not set for 45 yards?

Did you read his post? He said he doesn't know why he set it to 40. Mistakes happen when your adreneline is flowing.

I feel really dumb for making that mistake. I know I won't let it happen again. Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate it!
