I am a firm believer in freedom of speech, however I have started to examine what I listen to and what I allow my kids to listen to on the radio. I know it is entertainment, but for some reason, dirtbags and crap lyrics have started to really turn me off. That being said, I know rappers aren't the only one's using dirty lyrics an or context in their songs, but I don't think anyone is going to dispute the rap genre spits out the most lyrics about drugs, guns, treating women badly, violence, etc.

Bottom line for me lately is....."would I give my kids a book that contained the lyrics and pictures of the song and artists to read?" If I answer NO, then why would I allow my kids to listen to crap music on the radio?

Back to the question. Minus any talk of race, is most modern day rap music crap and does it hurt our kids/youth who listen to it? I don't want to hear the talk of "they grew up in bad environments and crap" and all of that other crap. I would put money on 80% of the tough guy rappers are actually just actors, seriously they act like they have lived tough lives to make money.......and the general public falls for it.

Lil Wayne. He most recently OD'd on drugs and was sent to a rehab facility. Blood gang member. Almost every song of his I hear I hear gang references and Blood gang calls. The lyrics to one of his songs with French Montana...

    B****! Stop talkin' that s*&(
And suck a nigga d*&%$ for some Trukfit

    Okay I f*** a b&^%# and I'm gone
    That’s gangsta: Al Capone
I make that p*&^% spit like Bone
I'm talkin' 'bout bone, bone, bone bone

I’m f&*^%n with French, excuse my French
I lose my mind before I lose my b****
Money ain’t a thing but a chicken wing
B%^$# I ball like two eyelids
YMCM beat that p***y, stop playin'
I make her a&^ scream and holla like rock bands
    I’m a beast, I’m off the leash
    I am rich like a b&^%$
On my Proactiv s***, pop that p**&y like a zit
I go by the name Lil Tunechi
    Your girl is a groupie
    And nigga, you's a square
And I will twist you like in a Rubix

    M$$%%r****r I'm on my skateboard
Watch me do a trick ho

    I’m 5′5” but I could six nine
Then beat that p***7 like Klitschko
    It’s French Montana, f*** Joe
    It’s Weezy F, f*** hoes
    It’s Truk the world
    It’s Truk yo girl

It’s Trukfit by the truck load, bi***!

Rick Ross. I'll tame down the lyrics for him......

The thirty-six holes leave you bleedin' fam
Word to them thirty-six O's in a kilogram

    Blunt tip, orange like caviar
Wilding out, fishtailing Subaru rally car
Out the passenger, letting the automatty off
A egg of that girl I'll knock ya Mommy and ya Daddy off
F$%$% around and knock the emblem on the Caddy off
Four shooters bugging out, blicking at ya Caddy doors
Did I mention guns from Red Dead Redemption
    Nine mils, fifty clip extensions

Coke is like a mattress in the hood, I'm flipping on it
And the money's like a chair, I'm sitting on it

Simply put 99% of them are trash. Gang members that were influenced by other gang members. I would say there is a couple that simply made it out of pure talent, because most of them do not have any.

I truly have no idea why anyone would want to listen to this no talent genre of "music"

I could understand an association if from the same environment they are from but most people have no idea about that lifestyle other that media.

I listened to rap as a teen but back then it was more of a fun style music and not gangster.

It was never an option for my kids to listen to it, atleast not here in my house.

I think this is a big part, as a college kid its this type of music you hear when going to parties and at the bars. Its what people want to listen to more because its up beat and sometimes catchy.

I just looked at Youtube and that song, "pop that" by French Montana.... 42,000,000 views

Lil Wayne "Rich as F***"=20,000,000 views

    Great.

I would say people are viewing this crap at a high rate.

If you didn't know what color the person was singing nor the social implications concerning your response, what would you honestly say about current rap music if asked?

I'm not referring to the beat, even the lyrics were fun.

I don't follow the rap scene, but there lyrics are no more crude than a genre I enjoy, death metal. Just seems as though since rap is more popular, gets more attention.

I don't see it as music, it's trash. They have to substitute curse words in for where some lyrics that actually mean something should go. Why anybody would want to try and spread the thug/gang lifestyle is beyond me. A lot of these guys talk about how they came from nothing and made something of themselves; wouldn't you want to try and have a positive influence on others rather than spreading the kind of crap that you had to work yourself up out of? I guess that it doesn't help that there is a lot of gov't. housing and gangs in the small town that I live near. The things they talk about in this sort of "music" are the sort of things that have ruined the town that I live a couple miles from. It's pathetic.

It's the musics fault that people are acting like gangsters? I highly doubt that.

I listen to rap, am from a town of 2000 people and I am perfectly fine.

Listen to the rapper "2 Chainz"... He graduated from ASU with a 4.0gpa.

It sells. Rappers today aren't gangsters, they just sing about it to sell albums to wanna be thugs and rich suburban white kids.

I actually enjoy rap music, as well as every other genre. Different settings call for different music. Won't be blaring Lil Wayne on way to Deer Camp, but certainly won't be listening to George Strait on the way downtown in Birmingham either...

I understand time and place but the lyrics and stuff are still crap for impressionable people, people that cannot or chose not to understand the difference between fantasy and reality.

On a daily basis I see teenagers and adults that play out the things they see and hear on both the tv and radio, especially the crap stuff seen and heard in rap videos, etc.

I mean does anyone good stand for treating women like a ho, sniffing cocaine and smoking weed, carrying illegal guns, and violence? That is pretty much the rap culture and the culture sucks.
