    Hey Everyone!

This is my first "go" at planting a food plot. Our area that we are going to use is about 2 acres, so not real big. However, the weeds are head high and we plan on mowing/disking it up next Friday with hopes to plant it soon after that. Are we getting to late to be doing this? It has been a crazy *** summer and we have not had any time as of yet to do it.

Also, we need a good mix for the area. Any and All help would be great!

    Thanks!

    Matt

It's not too late - Be sure to get a soil test before determining a specific mix to plant.

Winter Rye will grow on cement if you watered it enough.

What kind of maintenance does Winter Rye require?

none really it is always the first crop I put in new area I put a plot in. I use a small tiller and just break up the top soil. Rake it in and when you get rain it grows. It grows until the temp is in the low 30's and stays green. I like it because it grows thick so the weeds are kept down and it builds nitrogen in the soil. When you cruise the roads in the fall and see deer out in the fields that have been harvested that have a green carpet like growth that is winter rye farmers plant it as a cover crop in the fall. The fact that it stays green it was draws the deer in the late fall. The seed is cheep too
