Over the last year or so, my daughter has shown an interest in deer hunting. I did a little research within the MO regulations, and there doesn't seem to be a minimum draw weight listed. Wondering if the folks here with kiddos could pass along some wisdom......my daughter turns 11 this summer, is about 5' tall and is an athletic 90lbs. We're working on developing the muscles used for drawing a bow, and I'd guess we'd be at roughly 30-35lbs by fall.........my gut tells me this might not be enough umph behind an arrow, but figured I'd ask.

    Thanks!

Edit.....for arrows, would it be wise to cut them down to a suitable length to keep things lighter (and faster) or would longer (and heavier) be the way to go?

    Hi,

In NJ the min. draw weight is 35 lbs., i started hunting an old bear recurve when I was 12. I/it killed plenty of deer. Today the broad heads are better suited than 40 years ago, and shot placement is everything. Keep her practicing and get her a bow trainer to build & condition her upper body.

Just googled it and although they don’t have a minimum requirement they reccomend at least 40lbs, which is the minimum requirement in most states.

Minnesota’s minimum poundage is 30. Keep the shot under 20yds and use a good cut on contact head.

It sounds awesome that your daughter is interested in hunting and that you are so close to being able to take her out. Can't wait until my kiddos get to this stage. I would echo what others are saying, recommending a fixed broadhead and only taking shots that are incredibly close (I would limit it to 15 yds and in). Just getting her out with a chance to see something might keep her motivated to keep putting in the time and energy to build up her muscles. Good luck to you!

My idea may not be popular but there is nothing wrong with waiting. She can tag along on hunts and do all kinds of shooting in different situations to prepare her for her first hunt. Make the preparation and having something to look forward to a big deal. She'll remember all of the preparation and fun that went into it, if you make it a an adventure rather than an event.

JGD......I've actually thought about this very same thing. On top of hunting and shooting her bow, my kiddo is deeply involved in competitive soccer......for those of you unaware, the competitive youth sports thing is something else! Sometimes I wonder how I have time to do anything except for drive to practice, games and tournaments......anyhow, I'll have to play it by ear to see how her skills and strength are progressing.

    Thanks for the insight everyone!
