Im getting ready to get some mineral licks going to put the trail cameras over and hopefully have more luck with shed hunting this year. My questions is do you guys seem to have more luck or what do you prefer. To put the the "Contents" in the ground in mix it in or find a stump and through it all over that?

I use the mineral blocks that you buy at the feed store for cattle lot cheaper and works just as good as any other mineral lick.

I disagree. There is no such thing as a "mineral block" at a coop. It's a salt block. While those are great attractants they do more harm than good for the health of the deer.

There are some good quality minerals on the market. Personally I use Monster Raxx and my set ups look like this ...

They really hammer it when there is water in the hole. :deer:

Have you tried Bag R Buck? That stuff is a deer damn magnet!! A friend of mine used the the 5lb bag with a 10 lb bag and the deer made a 4x2 hole in the ground.

I use a set up like whats in the picture. I make a mineral dripper out of some water bottles. I put liquid minerals in them, such as buck jam or any of the molasses based stuff, like stump licker. Just hang the bottles from the tree and poke a small hole in the bottom. You can adjust how much it drips by how tight the lid is. If its too tight, it will create a vaccume and it wont drip. It has worked pretty good the last few years for getting good pictures.

So those are bad, you say? You're talking about the smooth, brown blocks, right?

What about the pressed mineral licks that have a rougher texture and bits of corn in them? Ive used them before but the deer really go through them.

23%-27% salt is not bad. With 4% Phosphorus anything over 8% Calcium is unused. Vitamin B is important for antlers also this has none. All in all not a bad product.

I would like to know the ingredients before I would give it to the deer. I can't seem to locate the ingredients on their website.

This is a tricky subject. Through marketing and wording products right Companies have got you to think that every thing is a mineral lick, even though most are salt licks. If getting pictures is your goal, then some of those products will do what you are looking for. If you are trying to get minerals and vitamins to help the health of your deer then you need to read what is on the label. Trophy Rock is over 94% salt and it says trace minerals. Calcium and Phosphorous work hand in hand in a 2 parts Calcium to 1 part Phosphorous ratio. If you do not have that ratio the extra is basically useless. Salt is CHEAP, that is why alot of companies use it, plus it is easy. Deer come to salt plain and simple, it takes alot of work to make a product that is low in salt that deer will actually eat.

Deer cane Black magic best thing I've found for our Manitoba deer(moose, elk, bear, rabbit) can't hunt over or around mineral/bait so only use the site to keep inventory with the cameras.
I have also found if I put a log, rock in the center of the site the coyotes scent mark it in turn shutting it down for a while so I keep them in a clear spot.

Deer cane is also over 90% salt and can't or shouldn't be considered in a mineral post. But it is a great attractant.
