I like the fact he mentioned for people to be trained in the use of firearms to protect ones self and family.

Owning a gun might not help if you are not trained how to properly use it. Add in stress / distress from self defense encounter, if one isn't familiar with their firearms usage it probably wont do them any good.

    I like it.

I can tell you he is taking major heat locally. Many people are pretty pissed about it.

What are they pissed about? I cannot fathom what could upset someone about this...

Good! They need to hear the reality side of life. LE cannot be everywhere, all of the time. It's simple physics. And I personally love seeing LE brass across the country taking a stance against the anti's uproar. These people need to be educated.

I would believe he's sincere if he hadn't mentioned the lay-offs as the reason they can't protect you. He's just trying to scare people into increasing his budget.

He's hoping a bunch of people will wet themselves at what he's proposing and push for a budget increase.

Really? Have you ever dealt with anti-gun liberals?

I will just post various comments I've read or heard.

    1. Milwaukee Co Sheriff "we suck so bad, citizens need to do our job for us"

    2. Of course statistics show that having a gun in yout house makes it more likely that someone in your household will be hurt by a gunshot. .. but carry on with your meth head, raper kicking down your door story because that happens sooooo often.

    3. What Clarke essentially said was "using the police doesn't work, so take the law into your own hands." And he's a police officer!

    4. Sheriff Clarke's deputies are "no longer the best option"...uh...why then are we spending tax dollars to keep them around? Get rid of them and hire someone who can get the job done.

    5. The most irresponsible position ever.

    6. NO, you can't. Get proper financing and do your job. Public safety is definitely NOT my responsibility other than my following the law and not making your job any more difficult.

With the county Sheriff department being 30 miles away... it is a no brainer here.

When I first moved here in 1988 you usually saw the deputy sheriffs twice a day patroling the area. Now days, you are lucky to see them in the area once a week if that.

Their budgets have been cut. With that and the price of gas... patroling is getting to be a thing of the past.

    You have two choices now...

    1. call and pray for 30 minutes while waiting for the deputy to show up.

    2. call and be prepared to defend yourself while you wait for the deputy.

I am not much for praying.

    Tim

What about in Milwaukee County where this ad was placed? Is it prudent for the Sheriff to run an ad saying these things? It is much more of an urban setting than you live in which change the dynamics.

It's more of a political ad then a public safety ad, nothing wrong with via the first amendment, his right.

Or keep his budget from being cut. His department recently won a heated arbitration that saved the jobs of 50+ deputies. Regardless, people will be forced to deal with bad situations while officers are in the process of responding.
Maybe I'm biased, but I agree with every word of his ad. And his timing is impeccable.

Definitely using the current gun debate to complan about his budget. Not that he shouldn't complain but its an odd way to do so.

Have you been to a gun shop, Cabelas, Gander Mtn etc lately and seen the people purchasing guns, especially hadguns? Many don't even know which end the bullet comes out of, let alone how to defend themselves with one. If I lived in an urban center I would NOt want my sheriifs dept encouraging the above people to arm themselves, bad things will happen.

He's not. He's telling them to get trained which is something I support for gun ownership in this country.

Yes, he's telling them to go buy a gun and get trained. My bet is that very few would get trained let alone spend the range time to familiarize themselves with a gun. You just dont encourage Joe Public to go buy a gun to defend themselves, especially in a big urban center.

Lots of City folks owning guns would scare me. I like his message although I think there's more to It then what he's saying.

It is pretty simple. People have an obligation to protect their families. What I find funny is people who dislike guns and gun owners, yet don't mind a police officer coming over and shooting a threat to their family if needed. It is the same as anti-hunters...dislike hunters yet will eat meat from the grocery store. Just plain dumb people in the world.

I am an LEO like Josh, and like him, don't mind people taking care of their own businesses when it comes to protecting themselves and their families, and also don't mind if every law abiding citizen is armed.
