So, I have two stands up on the property that we hunt, that I will be going to pull sometime in the next two weeks or so. I would hate to drive up there just for that, so I am going to go walk around, and see what I can find. Any suggestions? I will probably bring my dog up there, just for exercise. I know he wont mind, but I also know he wont be "finding" any of the sheds. I just thought since I will be walking around for that long, I should bring him along. Back to topic. Is there anything like signs that I should look for? Any specific areas of interest? Like thick cover? I know the pine lot area should have less deep snow in it, I will probably start there. Then I was thinking of heading into the thickets. ANy help with this one?
It's all about the food this time of the year. If you got it, like a cut corn field or hay, start there. Just walk it basically.. up and down and paying special attention along fencerows, and wooded edges. If you are back in cover, look for southern and eastern hillsides. Areas where deer can get some sun.. they love that this time of year. Hit the deadfalls.. the thicker the better. Pine thickets can be real good.. less snow and whitetail love to browse on the needles which will likely litter the thickets floor. Pay special attention to the edges of these thickets.. bucks like to cuddle up just outside them.. basking in the sun. Don't get discouraged if you find nothing. Most bucks are still holding both sides.. not many have shed yet. Look now.. then go back in about a month and look again. And remember not to look for color. Look for sharp lines.. points.. and smooth curves. But it's all about the food right now. Word.
