I picked mine up at my parents house this weekend, from a deer I killed on Christmas Eve. I am a little disappointed. What kind of deer are they (DNR) trying to portray on the patch?

What is this world coming to when a budget strapped DNR decides the best way to spend money is on patches to hand out to people who shoot a deer? You've got to be kidding me!

I love the patches, I wish the Wisconsin DNR handed out patches like the MDNR! My kid would of LOVED one for shooting his first this year! I didn't shoot a deer in Mi last season, what do they look like?

They used to give us pins at the check in stations when I first started hunting, but stopped doing it when they did away with the check stations. Now you have to send in a request, and I can't say for sure, but I think there's a charge associated with it. Not really worth it in my opinion... they would just sit around in a drawer somewhere.

In Illinois Brandon? Nope, there's a list of retailers, shops, etc.., you just show your tags and they give you your pins at no charge.
And take a look on Ebay on what the older ones go for, you would be surprised!

My bad, never realized that. I guess I just never worried about getting them once they got rid of check in stations.

If you look on ebay (curiosity got the best of me), these things have been around for (at least) nearly 30yrs.

Seems like a great program for the youths......but are adults really snatching these up? No issues, if they are.....just wondering.

The patches and pins are a neat thing in my eyes. I have been getting them ever since I started hunting. I think the first patch in Michigan was in the '60's and it is worth around $300.00, and yes people will pay it. This years though is a weird one, portraying a 1.5 yr. old buck and the antlers are messed up, I'll post a pic later. They are nice thing to pass down in the family. My uncle has about all of them, so it's cool to go back and look, he writes on the back what he killed and where it was taken.

Jeff, you have to shoot a deer to get one. They are a big collecters item so that's why you see the older folks buying them. A lot of people really enjoy it, hell I wish I had every patchn sure would make a cool collection!

I'll get some pictures from a guy at the club, he has most year I believe on his vest.

BHF is correct, it's more about tradition. It is/was a tool the DNR used to get hunters to stop at check stations and check their deer in.
