Would anyone from Michigan like to see QDM principles implemented state wide? The DNRE is said they want to do it and will be having public "open houses" to take comments on the idea.
Control the population, balance sex ratios, and improve the buck age structure...yeah I would like to see that. I don't see how you could really force someone to practice QDM though. They can't make people shoot does (where needed) and you can't make guys pass bucks based on age (antler restrictions are not part of QDM). They can't make people improve habitat and food sources. So its depends what they plan on doing to implement QDM principles.
What about weight restrictions. Like a slot limit. lol. Make you think twice about pullin that trigger. lol. kidding. sorry. I just think it's weird, that up there, we complained that our deer weren't getting big enough, down here they can't get them to stop breeding enough to control the populations. If they would take all the people up there that just want "Meat" and let them hunt down here, we would have a great trade off, no? Non-res tags for less? IDK... just thinkin out loud here.
Hunlee wares the Michigan Meat hunter hat with pride!!!!!!!!!! nice hat,,,,t surts an cooler cup holder with logo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hunlee
Good for Michigan for even thinking along those lines. There is NO hunting style or mindset that does not fit into QDM.
You don't have to force people to shoot does on public land. There are plenty of people willing to do it if they have a tag. QDM is about having a more natural age structure and if antler restrictions are needed then I think it's worth consideration. It would be much better than what we have now and most QDM co-op's use antler restrictions to achieve their age structure goals. QDM is also about keeping deer numbers below carrying capacity so habitat is not damaged and can regenerate not about doing habitat improvements. Although it is almost always done. In theory QDM is not about trophy bucks, but of course the reality is that it is all about antlers to the vast majority of people. What do you think hunlee? Would you rather get more meat for your tag?
I'd have to disagree with that. I have been in contact with many QDM co-ops over the last 3 years and I don't know a single one that uses antler restrictions. I'm not against the idea, I'm just not sure how they would pull it off. Many hunters in this state hate the idea of antler restrictions, so maybe using the letters "QDM" makes it sound better, idk. Either way I don't think it will happen. I think we'll see a one buck rule before state wide antler restrictions.
QDM people are telling hunters an farmers thay need to kill more doe out of the hurd butt his is total BS in southern Michigan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!QDM managers say doing this will save more food for the buck deer and with more nurisment for them horns will inturn be bigger!!!!!!!!!!!!!This is total BS as there is no food shortage in Southern Michigan with food enough to keep a much bigger hurd substained!!!!!!!!!!!!Hunlee is lucky to hunt in an area with high deer numbers and the biggust bucks in the county live there aswell!!!!!!!!Some areas in this same county have overkilled the doe deer and on a good hunt yous see 3 or 4 deer,,,,,,,,,hunlee hunting area yous see 20 to 30 with big bucks liveing there aswell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!QDM in southern Michigan is total BS butt more and more land owners are lured into beleaveing there practices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hunlee

I agree with hunlee on the QDM subject. QDM in my opinion should be a choice by land owners, lease holders and hunters not laws by polititians and "wildlife managers". Lets face it as bow hunters, more than likely we spend more time afield and often have the luxury to be picky about the deer we harvest. People that only spend a few days a year gun hunting shouldn't be punished and have to eat tags instead of deer. They spend their hard earned money on a license just like us. Hunting does not mean only harvesting large mature deer. Hunting means spending time with friends and family doing something you all love with the possibility of going home with something to show for even if it's only a memory. A basket rack to you is the trophy of a lifetime to some one else.
DNR is not the department of hunter satisfaction I do not want them to invoke QDM policies at all. Becasue there are known to set. Each piece of land is different; there is not a 1 shoe fits all approach. I think the DNR is going to try and have more 1.5 survive. Getting the kill down to 50% of 1.5 bucks. How they go about this a DNR policy not a QDMA one. AR are NOT a QDMA ploicy, OBR is not a QDMA policy. Associating QDM with state policy is wrong IMO, being QDM is for land owners and is more of a philosophy than policy. They do get involved with States and support policy, just like a lot of outdoor clubs. Michigan Bowhunters is one such club that works with the DNR also. BTW IMO it's Michigan bowhunter who have failed at helping keeping the dnr numbers under control. We shoot way more bucks then does, IMO it's not the gun hunter who hunts two days that is the issue.
I am not going to pretend to know MI regulations, but I thought MI was a 2 buck state? It would take over 50 years at two bucks per year to attain over 100+ skull caps.
For many year Michigan had 4 buck limits,,,,,,2 with bow an 2 with gun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Allso question arise as to the age of hunlee????????????? hunlee
