Been MIA from BH.com and everywhere else for awhile.... laying low on the internet and getting back to basics. A lot of new faces on here which is good to see! This past season was a rough deer season for me, I had several deer over 140" I was trying to kill but just couldn't make it happen. Already stacking the odds in my favor this year. Planted 4 acres of my property this year in food plots. Last year I had a mid 50's clean 10pt I was trying to kill but I never got the opportunity. I just gained access to the 650 acres of farm land he was bedding on, so I hope to relocate him and end this friendship between me and him. Had a local farmer plant RR Soybeans yesterday on 3 acres, planting clover in a secluded bottom tomorrow along my creek bottom, and turnips/brassicas this fall on the hilltop in the bean field as well. Not to mention I'm planting the entire thing in plot screen with wind breaks to force natural deer movements that I've patterned over the year. Here's some before pics, I will post up some mid growth pics, and finished pics from the stand once everything is grown. The deer have been flat out tearing the monster raxx mineral sites up since Feb when my 4 yr old and I put them out. Now we just wait for the seed to grow, the deer to show, and the arrows to turn red. Clover plot: Not to mention my other project which has kept me off the internet a lot.... Duck dawg #2 out of National Field Champ "Emmitt". He's been a handful and a lot of fun.
Welcome back! Sounds like you'll be ready come bow-season. I'll be looking forward to see trophy pictures with you and the clean 10.
Hey! Welcome back! Nice Dog, several of us have new labs this past year. Theres a thread somewhere about them.
Cute pup. His daddy is out of NAFC Carbon right? Emmit has a great pedigree, your pup should be a good one.
Welcome back!! Hopefully you can tag the 10 point this year...Definitely sounds like you have a good game plan going.....Looking forward to the pics.....
Thanks guys, Im ready to kill some birds and get even with the bow this year. Normally I kill at least one P&Y between the states I hunt and struck completely out last year!
Ready to kill some birds is right! Bring on Oct 4th, that's the ND opener and if all is good in my world that's where I'll be for another year of fun and adventure. My dog was a 8 month old puppy last year when we were up there and I had my old dog to do most of the work. I lost my old dog in Feb. so now its just going to be her. Of course she is way more prepared now, toward the end of season last year she was doing most of the work and we've been working getting her better for this upcoming season. Oh yeah, I'll probably bow hunt some, we're already out of deer meat.
I hear ya on that one! I think our pups are about the same age if I remember correctly. My CLM was in the same boat as yours last year, a little over whelmed but turned into a damn fine dog by March for Missouri Snow geese. If you haven't don't that yet its a BLAST! Your more than welcome to team up with us next year when we go out. My buddy guides out there and does diver hunts on Saginaw bay which is a blast also.
I've been known to kill a snow goose or two. I appreciate the offer to hunt with you though but I've got all my own stuff.
Thanks.Interesting story. We had 5-6 geese back peddling over the decoys and I was just about to call the shot when my buddy said "WAIT, that high blue behind them has a collar". He spun us once and we he came back around he was....high. I said lets get him and all three guns shot at once. He was so high that when he hit the ground the collar broke and flew back up in the air 20 feet! I love hunting snows about as much as ducks I just don't get to do it as much as I would like to now because its tough for me to get away that time of year. That bottom pic is in a rolled coffee bean field in AR. That field had 1000's of geese in it the day before and they were still in it when we went back to set up. We bumped them off in the dark and set up right where they were sitting. The spread you see in the pic is all we put out. It was just me and my dad and that was a nasty COLD hunt. I think we shot in the mid 30's that day but that number doesn't tell how many geese we had work us. Dad cant shoot. That hunt always brings back a good memory because of how tough it was. What part of MO does your buddy guide in? I've hunted them all over MO from the rice and beans in the SE part all the way up to squaw creek refuge in NW MO. Sorry guys, I realize this is a bow hunting site so i'll stop
