My dad put his truck in the ditch on the road into our cabin (it was snowy and icy) he could not get it out so he left it. Fast forward three weeks. he backs the truck right out. Put it in Drive nothing wont move an inch.

Any suggestions or diagnosis? If I cannot get it going tomorrow after work I will have to get it towed.

    Thanks for any help.

Dean, has he been driving it for the last 3 weeks? Is it automatic or standard?

He did not go in hard. It stayed in the ditch until the snow melted. It is probably in 4WD I will put it in 2WD tonight when I go out there. It is an automatic.

Check the shift linkage... could have been knocked loose when bound up in the ditch...

And how "hard" did he try to get it out? If he did alot of R to D rocking... something could have happened internally...

Same thing happened to me when I ran over a stick that broke my shift linkage cable. My guess is that the ice and snow messed up the cable. Easy fix and much cheaper than a tranny. Good luck.

Does the truck still go in reverse???? I mean, he backed it out of the ditch. I'm not a mechanic.... just curious.

If this is the case he could have broken the forward sprag. The problem is that it requires a complete rebuild. You'll still be able to use reverse just fine, but forward will act like neutral.

You just described it to a T. I am going to get it towed tomorrow.

    Any idea on cost?

What kind of Vehicle? I guess it depends on location and of course make and model... but you can bet between $1300-$2000 for a complete rebuild.

I just had a turbo 350 rebuilt for 500$ but anything newer is gonna be over 1500 at least. Hope it's a cheap easy fix for you.

It really depends on vehicle and who does it.
That happened on my 2000 F150. I had quotes up to $2k for a bulletproof rebuild.. Ended up a guy from my church did it for $900, and that was his shop taking it in and out.
