If you can handle the draw cycle. :D

Couple that kind of potential energy with a 700 gr arrow and it is really bad ***.

Even on the switchback the penetration was better with the 700 gr arrow. Looked as though it actually made it through the plate.

I have yet to see an on line calculator that was correct figuring bow speeds.

All I have seen figure it in a linear fashion and it doesn't work that way. As arrow weight increases, the bow is more efficient and it will transfer more energy to the arrow.

This is the exact same reason a bow vibrates more and is louder with a light arrow verses a heavy one.

I played with this calculator and it seemed to be off a little but it didn't seem to be figuring in a linear fashion.

Exactly! As far as calculators though...that one is the best ive found. I don't put much faith in it though...lol.

I edited my post. It is a decent calculator because it doesn't seem to be a linear one.

I shoot a 512 gr arrow over 300 FPS. Producing about 109# KE. My buddy was shooting his creed with a 350gr arrow a little over 300fps. At the same target his went almost to the fletching. My arrow blew through and went 40 more yards. Heavy > speed

I agree that both will do the job if you put it where it is supposed to be, but who hasnt made a bad shot? I like the mechanicals because of the damage they do and if I make a bad shot I have a better chance at getting that deer. Now that doesnt mean that I take questionable shots and hope that the mechanical bails me out. It just happens to be my personal preference.

Totally depends on where that bad shot hits. In the guts, you may have a better chance with a large expandable. Catch some shoulder and you are way better off with a good fixed blade every time. Now, which is closer to where you normally aim? The guts, or the shoulder? Statistically, you actually have a better chance with a well made fixed head. Especially when you throw in angled shots.

Speed is cool and what not, and in terms of the KE equation yes speed is a notable variable in a test lab. However, we are bowhunters. We are trying to PENETRATE hide, fat, muscle, and bone to break into the vitals and retrieve our quarry as quickly and ethically as possible. Therefore, I'm a strong believer in a slower heavy arrow>faster lighter arrow for hunting applications.

Mathews z7x, 530 grain Easton FMJ's, NAP spitfires/killzones, 70 lb, 30" draw, 262 fps, +- 82 ft/lbs of KE (if I remember right). These two will agree it's a deadly and quiet combination.

Also, someone above had mentioned a faster arrow helping with string jump. Would a faster louder arrow work better at preventing string jump than a slower quieter arrow? Food for thought and my .02 cents. Opinions are like buttholes, everyone's got one. My opinion is stated above.

I'm quite new to bowhunting, and heard lots of good and bad about both, but was Charlie sheen on to something years back...

Just a third option that I feel should be discussed just the same...

Ke means nothing its all about momentum yea you light fast arrows have a high ke at the start point but at 50 yards there losing energy at a rapid rate where as a heavy slow arrow keeps its energy for a longer peiod of time there fore haveing more penetration
