Question...I am shooting the G5 Tekkan mechanical broadheads and was wondering what is the best way to tune them? I have a bag target and I don't think I can shoot these broadheads at it. The doe I shot Friday was at 34 yards. When I practice with field tips Im dead on and when I shot that doe I was high and to the right. Any info would be appreciated.
Did you not shoot it before you hunted with it? Guess not or you would already know what to do. I use one of the cheap foam targets from walmart. The youth ones. They seem to not hurt anything at all and do a decent (not perfect) job of stopping mechs and not tearing them up. They are about $18.00. DO NOT shoot them at your bag target. Being off may have just been from it being a live deer. They have a tendacy to move from time to time. Try the targets I am talking about and always shoot the head you will be hunting with. I personally don't shoot anything outside of 20yd. I may end up pushing 25yd or so but thats just me. I shoot 75yd for fun and do well at it also.
You should always shoot and tune your broadheads, regardless of whether they're mechs or fixed heads. I've seen even mechanicals shoot differently than field points. The most likely reason is that the mech. heads are longer than a field point and change the spine of your arrow slightly. They also have more surface area exposed to the air around them and can cause slight differences. Get a foam target of some kind to shoot them into. DO NOT use a back target. I made that mistake once and accidently shot my bag target with a mechanical head. 20 minutes and hacked up bag target later, I had the head out.
I use a block. If money is an issue than get the $18 target mentioned. Congrats on the deer BTW. .02 deposited
Why do you only shoot 25 yards? If youre decent at 75 youre probably a sure shot at 40. I understand that when hunting you arent going to let wind or rain comprimise a shot, but if you were capable and the conditions are right, why wouldnt you take a deer at a greater distance? I practice to be consistent out to 40. I saw a deer at 35 and shot him perfectly earlier this year. I guess I just dont understand the mentality of "I can shoot a dime at 50 yards but I would never take a 30 yard shot hunting"... I apologize, not trying to segway this thread, I just see people say it a lot and it doesnt make sense to me.
