i am using a mechanical broadhead for the first time this year- the NAP Killzone's with trophy tips- i do not like using the actual broadheads on a block target for many reasons (cost, dulling blades, bending blades pulling them out, ect) - they provide a practice tip and it flies straight and true so in theory the actual broadheads should to- am i nuts to leave it at that or should i shoot the actual broadheads?
Shot two target tips at 30 yrds and then a Grim Reaper non-opening practice tip and was rewarding by having to take another Maxima 350 to the shop for re-fletching. That was good enough for me.
I've shot the killzone and it's practice blade side-by-side and POI is practically the same. The practice tip is a little louder and I can only guess that's because the 'blades' aren't sharpened at all. Actually....here you go:
I am switching to mechanicals this season. Used a couple old fixed blades for tuning, then the practice head. Field points and broadheads all fly the same out to 40 yards.
Mine were all the same after tuning with a fixed blade. BTW my grim reaper BH only lasted 4 shots into a yellow jacket target before I had to rebuild it.
I shot the Kill zone practice heads out to 50 yards and they shot well. I only shot one at an animal so far and it worked great at 20 yards....killed an antelope. I'm not shooting the real thing for practice when they come with a practice head.
I bought the Killzones and they weigh more than 100 grains, 108 grains to be exact, and the practice tip comes in at 106.5 grains. Not a huge difference between weigh of practice tip and actual broadhead but is 8 grains more than they advertise as a 100 grain broadhead. They do still fly the same as my regular practice tips, until 40 yds then they drop about 9 inches. still flies good but make sure to check if you shoot 40 or more yards.
Personally, I want to shoot the actual broadheads I am going to hunt with, before hunting. Last year I had one broadhead that just would not fly right, even though it spin tested perfect. I just put dull blades in the head, shoot it, and if it shoots good, put the new blades back in. I feel much more confident that way. I keep a bunch of used blades to use for testing the new heads before hunting with them.
That's exactly what I do with fixed blade heads. I have lots of used blades for my Muzzy's. I'm just not going to do it with mechanicals.
so i shot the practice tip for the kill zones today along with my field points today and the are grouping great out to about 30-35 yards- 40 there is a slight drop but i just set my pin with that in mind and it works beautiful- i'm feeling good about the practice tip and not chewing up the actual broadheads till a real life target walks by- thanks for the input all
i shot the grim reaper practice heads when i used grim reapers, they flew true as my field points, they did break after a while tho
