Gonna cut both ends of a can of Bush's beans and attach it to the target. I'm guessing that is around 4" dia. Will do this challenge if I ever get out of work before it is dark and the temps actually get near the 80's....70's would be even better. I don't know how you hot region guys/gals hunt in this cr@p!!

This sounds similiar to an iron buck that I once saw....or even shooting at clay pigeons.

Great Job! I encourage everyone to not just try it but do every so often just to remind you that there are consequences.

If they aren't using the wood or metal then you have to wonder where their confidence in their max range comes from ;) .

The can is not the challenge. A 4" circle is not the challenge. The challenge is a circle out of metal or wood. Something that will ruin your arrow if you miss. There is no challenge if it is easy and there are no consequences for a bad miss.

Greg, you're truly an inspiration. Not only because you consistently put down big deer but you do it with equipment of yesteryear. I think more "hunters" (including myself) need to be like this. I don't think I will buy anymore bows for a long time. The ones I have now will definitely get the job done.

I can't wait to try this challenge. How many successful practice sessions would you say someone needs to determine their max range? Example, I go out and center punch that 4" circle at 50 yards. How many times should I successfully do this? I'd think the first three times would suffice.

I understand the point of this challenge but I still would not make my max effective range 50 yards on a deer just because I could accomplish it during the challenge.

Cool challenge Bruce! Love the idea. Yeah im sure this would change some minds about max range. I have shot Iron Bucks out to 60 with a 6.5" diam hole and man it gets in your head,,I think that needs factored in. One does worry about ruining an arrow so there not totally relaxed unless there that confident going up against steel  The arrows I used were heavier grained and considered expendable, I never have tried my good ones on it and always had field points attached. I might try soon out to 40,,,junk arras with practice Broad heads :ninja: Not using my good ones!

I couldn't say how many sessions a person would need just as I couldn't say what a person's max hunting range should be. The whole idea is to get folks to stop and actually think what "max range" is. To me, it isn't the range I can hit a specific target every time. It is the range I can hit a specific target when there is something at stake, when the pressure is amped up a little, when the conditions may not be perfect. Just in this thread you see guys "taking the challenge" yet they do not risk anything because they are shooting paper. Heck, the only risk we are talking about is losing an arrow. When the rubber hits the road for real, then we are talking about a bad shot on a deer, not just a busted arrow.

It is easy to try this when nothing is at risk, it is when you (anyone) has the balls to risk something (one arrow in this case) that the challenge gets trickier ;) . If you (anyone) aren't willing to bet an arrow on your abilities at your stated max range then how confident are with your max range? I guess this is point where personal ethics come into play. If you won't bet an arrow at any time on your max range, why would you bet a deer?

I couldnt agree more. At the rod and gun club I belong to there is a 3d course and Ill follow guys through that will shoot at targets at 50 and 60 yards. Halfway through the course is a bionic deer made of metal with a six inch hole set up at 30yds, they almost never take the shot they go to the next target and happily shoot at whatever range the target is set up at. Without consequence it means nothing. I routinely take this shot but never with a broadhead so ill try to get there this weekend with a broadhead.

I understand. To be honest, I don't think shooting wood is really raising the stakes. You might damage a broadhead but your arrow should still be fine. I need to find me a small sheet of metal and cut a hole in it. Again, thanks for the idea and I'll post up my results when I do it.
