So I'm looking to buy a new mattress and boxspring in the near future. We bought our last one about 5 years ago, and we kinda cheaped out and bought around a $1000 setup, and now the thing is in horrible shape and has been for at least the last 2-3 years. We decided to upsize and just had a new king size bedframe delivered, so now it's time to start looking at mattresses and boxsprings.

My only criteria is that it's got to be either a Sealy, Optimum, or Stearns & Foster brands. One of my best friends back in NY works for them and can get me a ridiculous discount on their friends and family program (like less then half off MSRP). The savings is too good to pass up and this time around I'm wanting to get a top end setup that will last for a long time.

With that said, what can you educate me on when it comes to mattresses? What are the differences between traditional spring mattresses vs. hybrids vs. gel memory foam vs. latex foam? Anything else you can share that's important to know?

I went through the bed purchasing process about 2 years ago and like you I did a ton of research, asking friends, laying on dirty mattresses at mattress shops, etc. In the end we settled on a memory foam mattress from BedInABox.com. I have to say it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. Memory foam takes a little while to get used to the new feel versus the standard pillow top/spring mattresses but after sleeping on one for awhile you realize how much better they really are.

Our mattress has a Silk top with gel infused memory foam underneath. Link here - Natural Silk Elegance GEL Memory Foam Mattress | Mattresses | BedInABox For the king mattress, support and new frame we paid just over 2K out the door and it was shipped to my house within a couple days. We couldn't even touch any of the "major" brand names for that price.

If we didn't go with BedInABox our next choice was the Sealy Optimum series. If you can get a deal on them that would be a great choice IMO. They're just so stinking expensive at retailers.

It's been 5 years now, and I wasn't involved too much in the decision, but I second the memory foam. We paid a premium for ours, but it's worth every penny. We travel a lot to friend's homes that live out of town and I haven't slept on a bed that even comes close. I can look up the information when I get home.

If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times - you're more manly that all of us combined. Not everyone can sleep on a bed of rocks with one eye open and a sword in their hand like you can. Leave us alone, bully.

Can't comment on the brands you're focused on. We got the Simmons Beautyrest Black Beauty about 8 years ago. Cost a LOT (like $2600) but it feels just like a 5-star hotel bed and is well worth the $ considering you spend 30% of your life in bed.

Probably considering a Sleep Number bed next with the snore reduction setting....I know the wife wants that....haha.

Another vote for Memory Foam. You won't be disappointed! We got the Temper-Pedic. It is pricey, but worth EVERY DANG PENNY!
