I'm not asking for myself, more for a friend of mine that hasn't bowhunted in years due to shoulder problems. He got out of it a while ago, so I'm wondering, say a Matthews Z7 was set at 40 pound draw and 29" draw length, what would be expected from the arrow at thirty yards? Is the bow capable of delivering enough punch at that range to ethically take shots that far with such a low draw weight? The man loved to bowhunt, and I'm hoping that a Z7 could solve his problems, as I've heard that the draw is exceptionally smooth. So what do you guys think? Matthews Z7, 40#, 29". Capable of dropping them at 30 yards? 40? Also, if anyone would like to suggest other bows that could be capable of good results with low draw weights, I'd love to hear them!
I hear that 40 is good enough to kill a deer. Personally, I shoot about 65 and will be going up to 70 soon...
40# would work at 20 yards not sure about 30 yards at that weight I personally wouldn't shoot out to 30 yards.
The guy at the Archery shop I go to us as anything over 30 will kill a deer but you really need to be disciplined about the distances you shoot. He basically said the absolute max would be 25yds until you get up to 40-45 then you can start moving out. I would bet the absolute max at 40# would be 30 yds though. I have seen video of deer taken with a 30lb bow at 30 yds (It was 25 or 30 been a while since I have seen the show). Pass through and that was with a PSE Chaos. It was on one of the Drury brothers shows it was one of their daughters. It was about as perfect of a shot you could have and they were using the Rage 40ke. I think when I get a bow next year I'm going to go way down on the draw weight. I don't have any problems pulling back 60 or 70 for that matter but my family does have a bad history with joint issues so I figured why tear myself up if I don't need to and with these bows now you don't need to. Probably going to go down around 52 or so. The new bows at that wieght will still probably hit as hard or harder than mine at 60 anyway.
I personally think that with that bow and set-up. 30yds. would be the max, but I would for sure use a cut-on contact broadhead. I see by your signature you use redhead black outs. I like them. I went thru this when my wife started hunting. She shoots a 40# diamond razor edge and a 25" draw with those redhead blackouts and I tell her 25 yds is her max, but I'm sure she may be able to kill at 30. Its not going to be a pass thru......Just for example that may help you decide.....My wifes bow setup like that, she shot a deer at 18 yds....the arrow didn't pass thru, but went in one rib cage and buried itself in until it hit the opposite ribs. So it was good penetration. Hope that helps.
A coworker and friend of mines mother who is up there in age shoots a jewel at 38# and a 25-26" draw and has had numerous passthroughs on bear and deer. with is added DL and a couple more pounds i wouldn't see any reason why he couldn't shoot anything he wanted out to 35 yards.
I shoot a Redhead Blackout bow, not the broadheads. Anyway, thank you guys so much for the information! Hopefully I can help to get this man back in the deer stand.
I wouldnt shoot farther than 30-35 with that setup, but I owned a PSE Stinger and that is a very smooth drawing bow you might want to take a look at, also alot cheaper than the matthews.
