I am shooting a QAD rest and recently noticed that I'm starting to get black streaks on on the two bottom vanes. I'm shooting odd vane up and I'm wondering if the timing on the rest is not correct in which case the rest is not dropping away fast enough causing the bottom two vanes to make contact with the rest. I'm shooting great groups so I am hesitant to change anything. Also I really don't know how to change the timing on the rest as I bought the bow second hand with everything already set up. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks.
Yep your hitting. Hard to tell whether your timing is wrong or if your rest is bouncing back up. I'm going to guess your shooting blazer vanes. One of the reasons I switched to 3" vanes. More clearance and better bh correction. How far below the rest is the timing cord attached to the cable? Are the two hash marks on the thumb wheel aligning in the last couple inches of draw? To see if the rest hitting the riser shelf and bouncing back up, spray the shelf with a aerosol foot spray.
I can understand being hesitant to change things when the groups are good. Your problem may be simply fixed by loading the arrow with the cock vane pointed in a different direction. For example, I got contact with the containment bar and the cock vane so I load my arrow with it pointing down now. If your problem is with the rest bouncing off the shelf then this advice probably wont help much. I have my QAD rest mounted and the nocking point set so that it doesn't touch the shelf when down.
I've shot QAD rest for years and really like them and never had a problem until I put one on the bow I'm shooting now. This bow has a 6" brace height and I was getting marks on my vanes like you. QAD rest come with two height arrow rest. I always used the shorter rest but changed to the taller rest on this bow and it corrected the contact issue but I also had to retune the bow with arrow sitting higher on the rest (nocking point etc). I guess the taller rest gave the rest a little more time to clear the vanes when dropped. I've gone to a whisker Biscuit this season only for the simplicity as all I do is hunt and travel a little to hunt. Nothing to do with the QAD's, just fewer moving parts and ease of readjusting if something goes wrong on a hunt. I still have QAD's on two other bows. My backup hunting bow and a bow I was going to target shoot if I ever get time.
When your at full draw does the line on the rest line up with the line on the flipper? At the shop I go to, they like to have the line go just past it as it will get the rest drop a tad sooner I think. I'm no expert but worth a try. All you would do is pull the cord a tad tighter.
Thanks a bunch for the info gents. New again to archery after 20 years and the learning curve can be somewhat complicated. Will see if the marks line up at full draw and reevaluate from there.
I've also noticed on my QAD's that if I adjusted the rest all the way down to where there was clearance between the rest and the shelf I didn't have a bounce back problem but if the rest hit the shelf when dropped that sometimes it would bounce back. I found this out setting up the rest with clearance then adding moleskin which let it make contact.
