Think it was Winchester brass but was a reload (not my own). Blew out the extractor and ruined the barrel.
Springfield took care of it for $40; no questions asked.

I'm just asking- are you implying he did something wrong?

If you get attacked by a bear twice in one day, you are having a bad day. Can almost imagine the guy thinking well I survived a bear attack I can get thru this, what else could go wrong? Only to get attacked again. At that point are you lucky to survive two bear attacks or are you cursed because you got attacked by a bear twice in one day?

I'd have to say you are lucky. Or blessed. It sounds like there was little permanent/long term damage; they didn't address this in the article but I wonder if he is still able to make his knives with those injuries.

Assuming he is still able to make a living doing what he loves, he's a very lucky man and that's a BA story.

the link above is to interesting article about the police with 40 cal. handguns and 5.56 rifles having to put down some serious animals because a nut job let them out of their cages and they were a threat to the community. Just pointing out what a trained individual with a .40 can do.

Where possible I'll also carry a 10 mm or 40 cal in the woods (non-grizzly area). below is the advice from the great smoky mountains website regarding black bear attacks :

If the bear shows no interest in your food and you are physically attacked, the bear may consider you as prey:
    • Fight back aggressively with any available object!
    • Do not play dead!

I'll add to my previous post that were I expecting trouble I'd prefer a shotgun with slugs and buckshot or a large bore rifle depending on the circumstances.
