An Indiana man died Monday after tussling with a deer he thought he'd shot and killed. Paul J. Smith, 62, was hunting deer at Chain O'Lakes Monday and called his son shortly after 9 a.m. to say he'd shot a buck, the state department of natural resources said. When his son returned the call at about 10:30 a.m., Smith said that when he'd descended from his tree stand to dress and tag the deer, he quickly discovered that it was still alive, natural resources said. Smith told his son he struggled with the deer before killing it with a knife. About two hours later, a park employee found Smith unconscious, slumped against a tree. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The autopsy revealed lacerations on his liver in line with internal bruising, natural resources said. Don't forget to poke that deer with your broadhead before gutting him. Rocky
