I've never tried to make a mock scrape before, but after bucks made a scrape about 60 yards away from my stand last season I'm pretty interested in them now and plan on making one in bow range this season. So after shopping around and looking at all the scent products and reading tons of reviews and opinions, I stumbled across a forum thread on another site talking about just peeing on them yourself. It wasn't just one guy making a smarta** comment either. There was a lot of people on there swaring that peeing on the ground theirself worked better than any deer scent they'd used. Just wanting a few more opinions on this. God knows I'd rather take a leak on the scrape everytime I went hunting instead of dumping money into products that might not even work!

I've been doing it for 3 years now. I posted a couple pics over on AT-not sure if that's the site your talking about. I set a cam up on one the first time I tried it and got a bunch of pics of different bucks. I don't think ill ever buy deer urine again.

I can honestly say that I have never heard anyone say that. It is always been my understanding that you wanted to keep human scent out of your hunting area.

Urine of any kind turns to ammonia quite quickly. I think human urine works well because of the volume, instead of a few ounces you're putting a bladder of scent. Its going to lack pheromones but deer using it fill that need. This year im going to use a mixture of distilled water, ammonia, and vanilla extract because its just easier when making multiple scrapes.

It works. I think I posted some pics on here. I know I made a mock scrape with scent last year and peed in another. I got a pic of a deer hitting the one I peed in just hours after I made it and from there on it stayed active for the remainder of the season. I've peed out of my tree only to have deer walk right through it minutes later.

I don't think human urine bothers deer because they don't recognize the source. Human odor while hunting gets a response cause deer have been spooked by people while smelling that odor. Unless a deer catches you taking a p*** they shouldn't know the difference. Also a human male should have traces of testosterone and other hormones in his urine that deer should respond to it.

It depends on your approach to hunting. I'll be 100% honest, my opinion (based on many things), is that mature and I'm talking mature bucks will not like it. Yes I understand the science between urines all turning to ammonia and basically physically being the same at a point, but like stated before there is going to be obvious pheremones and gland type scents that just won't match up which could spook those intelligent big boys we're after. Now understand nothing is 100% in the woods when it comes to deer, yes a mature huge 7 year old may visit the scrape you peed in but only at certain times when his mindset of trying to just survive is now turned to strict breeding and he for lack of a better term gets "stupid".

I've become a fan of the less invasive I can be the better. I'll collect my urine in a container every trip in, minimize my scent dispersal with a brisk walk to stand, proper scent control system (extreme for some) during the hunting season. Now during the offseason I have nothing wrong with making my presence known and the deer getting familiar with it, that way come season when my scent is hopefully faint they've been condition to it and won't spook across the county due to just a hint of my scent (hopefully assume it's old and keep moving as they were).

Now all that said, I do use scents on natural made scrapes or ones I'll open up at the proper time of the year (very small window 3 times a season) and I choose to only use frozen deer urine scents to again immitate nature as much as I possibly can.

    Just my thoughts for free....

I normally pee in a bottle but when the rut is on I let it fly right of the stand and into the sunrise. the only bad thing about peeing off a stand 20' off the ground is once you start making the loud noise of Urine hitting the earth it's hard to stop it until your finished.

Note to self; pee in a jar and dump it out when you get down.

Typically I try to pee down the side of a tree to stop noise. That way it just slowly runs down the side instead of hitting the ground after falling 20'. Works great.

I dont know why you would do this. So much for being stealthy in the woods. If you are hunting mature buck this is completely outrageous. Everyone spends all their time with expensive scent free clothing then you pee out of your stand.

Way to grab a section of what I said and read into it. No biggy though, I understand other sides or opinions exist and like I said there are times I'd say logic or that survival instinct in a buck can get overridden and they'll do some crazy things....but I've had mature bucks even then seemingly fight off the urge and stay stealthy it would seem.

All I can do is comment on the three pictures you attached, the first one and last one, yes both I'd consider mature. The first one is slightly on the younger side of mature maybe a good 3 1/2 year old...the last one is a stud, and look it's dark when he visited, he's not stupid. If he feels safe in the dark, which they will 99% of the time, they'll investigate whatever and wherever they want...how do you think they learn human scent in the first place, it's not just from the fall.

The middle buck honestly to me doesn't look mature, if he's a 3 1/2 yearold he doesn't look it, I'd peg him at 2 1/2...again though without knowing the buck it's hard telling. This one during daylight catches my attention if he's a confirmed 4 1/2 year old or older using the human pee scrape...I'd want to know time frame, moon phase and temps and such before I'd concede my opinion.

I respect guys who have shot deer over their own pee...shoot when I was younger I used to pee over the side as well and still saw deer. I've just never had a mature stud 4 1/2 or older come waddling up to it. Again just my opinion.

***edit: also how long after human pee was introduced were these pictures taken? Was there a weather system rain/sleet/fog/mist/snow between pee and picture? Just some things I'd be curious to know for my own curiosity.

tynimiller, top buck was a 4.5, possibly 5.5. Got him on camera in 2010 over another mock scrape I created and is at least a 3.5 in those pictures from 2010. I'll have to find the hard drive I have all of my trail camera pictures on from the last couple years and I'll be able to answer this: "edit: also how long after human pee was introduced were these pictures taken?
