You guys know the one with the prusik not? Would 3/8" braided line from tractor supply be ok? Tie in a prusik not and start climbing. I think 3/8" braide line should be strong enough. What do you think?
Get real climbing rope. It's made to withstand the force generated from a body falling and it is much stronger as well as resistant to wear and abrasion. Sure it's pricier but can you put a price on your life? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Agreed...the braided line is tuff and would probably work but it wont be that much more to use a rope thats designed for what your doing....your life is worth doing it right Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
I'd use it. A 3/8 solid braid nylon rope has a breaking strength of 2700 lbs. You don't weigh 2700 pounds do you?
I've made about a dozen of my own and just buy the good rope. 3/8 seems good but when in doubt go bigger. Their just great have though. Pisses me off when my "tough guy hunting buddy's" still don't wear harnesses My point now is " don't put me in the positions that I have call your wife and kids with the bad news". In other words, don't climb a stand or "especially one of MY stands" without a harness during my watch.
Massmam - use climbing rope. Numerous reasons listed above - plus it has some "stretch" built into it. Slightly less jerk if/when you do fall can be the difference between a back injury or not. Afflicted - great post...and a similar mentality to that we use at our camp. Just don't give people the chance to be "macho" (dumb). Also...with the youngins coming up...it's an already made decision: you're not going up that tree without a harness...don't ask/try/get caught. 2012 Bear Encounter 27" / 70lb draw QAD Ultra HD rest Trophy Ridge 6" Static Stabilizer Beman ICS Hunter 400 NAP Thunderhead 100g broad heads Summit Viper Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk - now Free
I've looked into this once before. The cost of the right rope is going to run you around 0.80 per foot at 30 ft that is $24. The prusik cord per rope is going to cost around $4 per rope for a single or $8 for a double. This doesn't include shipping costs. You can buy a 3 pack from HSS for $100. In short it wasn't worth my time and effort unless I was going to need a bunch of them. Also you want a nice carabineer for each rope then that will cost you an additional $8 to $10 per rope.
You're definitely right about the cost, however I've managed to save a few bucks. I've ordered 25 feet at .53 cents a foot of 8mm climbing rope and am paying 7 bucks for the prusik knot. The shipping is about 5 bucks with a total of 25 bucks. I'm going to use my carabiner that I got with my HSS lifeline so there's no need to buy one. I save bout 15 dollars which is a lot because I don't make a lot being a college student. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
