Choose either powder type or fiber type. For fiber type take a empty 35mm film canister and drill small hole in center of bottom, I think i used 3/16". Fill with either cotton balls, which I cut up into smaller pieces or natural plant fiber like cattail, or milkweed. Push material through hole from inside to start. Put cap on and your ready to go! For powder type take an empty eye drop or nose spray bottle and remove tip. Clean all parts out. Drill a 1/16" hole from the tip opening through to the bottom. Clean out plastic shavings. Fill with chalk line chalk. Put tip back on and your set, don't forget to put the cap on! The powders come in several colors, so use you like and can see the best. A word of caution though, don't breath in the dust, or let it get into your eyes, it is a irratant. Also don't get it on your clothes, because some colors will permanently stain.
For the chalk kind I use baby powder instead of chalk line powder becauce baby powder will not stain your clothes.
Great ideas! Another one I've used is take fine thread about 12 inches long and tie it at one end to a thumb tack. Hang it from a branch nearby or overhead. Until it gets hung up it constantly tells you which way the wind is blowing just at a glance.
My buddy does this except with a piece of floss. An he ties it to the end of his stab. He has always swore by it.
I decided to post two ways of making them, cause when I hunt on public land the fibers of the cotton balls don't really work that well unless you are elevated, like in a tree stand.
What about using baking soda for the powder style seeing as some people use it as a scent control? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thats what I use. It works alright, baking soda is kind of heavy, so it won't float in the thermals quite as well as lighter powders. But if you understand thermals to begin with, it gives you a pretty good understanding of what your scent is doing. And its cheap!
I am not a fan of the powder kind anymore. I had the cover come off in my pocket somehow and my whole pocket was full of powder! I do tie a piece of yarn fiber to something (gun barrel or bow) and that has worked very well.
Chopped up or whole CDC feathers would work well. You could even wash out a small plastic spice jar. It would give you a flip top lid and you can pull out one feather and let it drift. They will float for a long time and not spook animals.
