Ya, that'd be trickier but I am fairly sure they make a system for it. Something along these lines? This was just the first link I saw. appeared to be several options http://thedoorgenie.com/
Its not really the way I wanted to attack this problem. But I'll think about it. As you said, kid needs to be less careless. And I need to get my dog from leaving the yard one way or the other.
Wireless fence for the dog. For the kid, make him stand and play doorboy for you for a while when you are grilling or something else when you know you will be in and out many times.
Brad when you get home from work this evening have a cold 6 pack and go over to the neighbors and tell them your buddies on the internet said it was no big deal that a little buffing compound should buff out those minor scratches, tell them as punishment the kid who accidentally left the door open is going to buff out the scratches by hand on nights and weekends.
Actually I would offer to take it to a detail shop have the scratches buffed out by a pro and have them detail the inside of the car as well.Shouldn't cost more than $300
$300 ?!?!?!? How about a $9 bottle of Maguires Black Magic, a buffing pad w/ 20 minutes of elbow grease? Had worse scratches than that come out with just those.
Ouch that sucks! I see quite a few mentioning buffing it out but isn't that in the clear coat? Will it buff out and polish back up again???
Picture this guy: 65 Years old. Affluent. Retired. Anal. Nothing to do. Everything is top notch and neat and clean. He was backing out to drive to go play bingo. You know the guy.
Yep I would pay the detailer, sucks to pay to have done to a SUV that you wouldn't drop that kind of money on your own SUV. A pro should be able to make the scratches disappear and the inner detail job is an I am sorry gesture.
It depends on how deep they are. There's 4 typical kind of scratches. Ones that just leave a scuff mark (damage to the clear coat but not to the paint layer that can be buffed out), clear coat scratches (scratches that go through the clear coat but doesn't damage the paint layer and should just require a rubbing compound), paint scratches (requires sanding, rubbing compound and touch up paint - you need to know what you're doing), and then bare metal scratches (needs to go to a body shop). It depends on if your neighbor wants you to do it or if he wants to take it somewhere to have it fixed. If it's just through the clear coat and doesn't damage the paint layer you're looking at $50-$75 at a body shop. If it damaged the paint layer you may be looking at $150-$300 at a body shop. EDIT: It looks like one of the first two types of scratches that can either be buffed out or fixed with some rubbing compound and possibly touch up paint if needed.
It is going to a body shop to figure all this out. He is not going to play the "We can fix it ourselves routine".
