I am a Garmin believer when it comes to a handheld GPS, but sold the basic Etrex I used in '05......worked great for such a basic unit. It really helped me not be lost on my daily excursions in the Flat Tops. I've recently found some hot deals on various models of the Magellan Triton series. Can download topo maps, etc. Anybody have any experience with any of the Triton series...........just trying to save a few bucks on hopefully a good GPS.
Cougar, I bought a Magellan Triton 400 this year. My old Magellan of like 5-6 years had trouble picking up satellites out where I hunt. The Triton had no such problems. It booted up and found the satellites with relative ease, even in the rain. It has a much improved battery life as compared to my last Magellan and was relatively inexpensive. I downloaded hybrid topo/contour maps on it. The screen resolution is not the best, yet I can see the contours and the aerial views pretty well. All in all I would give it 4 out of 5 stars based on the price I paid for it. I am happy with my investment.
If you really like Garmin, do a google search on the model you want. You can likely find a refurb unit for almost half the normal cost, and they typically include the regular warranty as well. I bought a Rino 530hcx this way, with the standard warranty, and it was $269 shipped to my door.
Thanks, that is exactly the model I was looking at. For the price I hate not to give it serious consideration.
CougarMag... ...for what it's worth - make sure to check Ebay. I followed Will's advice and just today received my (used) Magellan 315 in the mail - $36 plus $7 shipping. Spent 15 minutes with it and already happy with purchase. Very easy to use, and picking up plenty of satellites from inside the house...should do everything I need it too in CO. Good Luck...
