Well i went out a few weeks ago with the chain saw and started to do some work on a new killing plot for this year. I didnt end up taking any pictures before i started like I wish I would have, but this is what i ended up with at the end of the day.

So after i had all the down trees cleared out we came in with the tractor yesterday to start clearing off the ground floor.

After we got it cleared and put lime down

The plot ended up being about 40 yrds X 20 yrds. Where gonna let it rain a few times to settle the lime, but we figure in about 2 weeks where going to come back till and plant to do the final touches. Should be a real good staging spot for them to come up out of the thick bottom and stop there before heading out to the big fields.

Looks good! Have you thought about thicking up the edges at all?

No not really, what kinda of benefits you thinking with this??
I noticed in one of your threads you where trying to figure out a way to get rid of the small threes. i had a ton in this plot and i would dig the shovel down lift up just to loosen the dirt then pull it out. Wasnt to bad just a little time consuming.
This plot I am thinking Antler king Mini Max, it had 5 differnt types of clover and some rye mixed in

Deer will feel safer in the plot if they can't see very far. Right now it looks pretty open and the concern I would have is deer may not feel safe during shooting hours. Take a look at some of the hinge cutting threads as that might be a great way to make that plot more productive. Or if you don't want to cut more trees you might be able to plant something around the edge.

Looks great so far!! If you are looking for something to plant for a thicker edge that's an annual you could look into sorghum. It can grow up to 6 ft. tall and provide a great screen if that's what you are after. There are also some other name brands of seed for plot screens you can look for.

I've seen a couple different plot screens but they were all annual, is there anything perennial?

Looks great! With the plot size being under a 1/4 acre, I would plant something that has a fast regrowth. Depending on your deer density the plot might get wiped out too early. Clover, winter rye, oats would be a good mix. Maybe throw some purple top turnips in the mix also.
    Medium red clover 2lbs
    Winter rye 20lbs
    Oats 20lbs
    Purple top turnip 1lb

This is more of a fall mix planted around early-mid August. If planting for summer I would plant Oats and clover

Perennial screens would be switch grass, shrubs or fir trees. We use Egyptian Wheat until the screen (trees) develop.

Nice job. I also agree with some type of edge cover. You should have some great hunting this season. Good luck, and please post some pics after you get it planted.

Alright thanks one thing the farmer said he doesnt really want me planting anything that buds at the top kinda like egyptian weat, he says that they polinate to well and he doesnt want it starting to grow in other places.
ya that is one thing I am kinda worried about, im thinking im gonna plant it and see how it goes through the summer then worse case I will have to go back in and do a fall planting.

Thanks and i will make sure to keep updateing through out the summer with growth and pics from the camera

Heres a little update on the plot. Was able to get out this weekend and till, fertilize, and seed the plot.
