This weekend while turkey hunting at Pat mayse WMA I had a companion. While setting up camp in the dark on Thursday night this little guy came up and bumped me. Now, we all know deer can be quiet, this guy was. It was VERY DARK, and, well lets just say I about come unglued when a furry head bumped the back of my arm as I was loading gear into my tent. I had a flashlight aimed into the tent so I didn't see him or hear him. After RAPIDLY rolling away,( I'll never admit to screaming like my 5 YO daughter), I shined the light on the creature from the dark. It was this guy.

A button buck with no fear of man. It won't go well for him come October. He'll end up walking right up to an arrow I'm afraid. That night I tried to scare him off and teach him to fear man but to no avail. I threw sticks and yelled and he just came back. He acted more like a dog than a deer. I thought about peppering him when he was still around on Friday morning but decided not to. I just figured about the time I pulled the trigger a GW would pull in. Go ahead and try explaining that one.
The deer would either paw at my tent or bump it with his head several times throughout the night waking me up.
Saturday morning he followed me on my entire morning hunt. I thought he might help a wary Tom feel good enough to come in.
This pic was taken as I was loading up to go home. I made a trip to the car with some gear and he just walked right into my tent.
The turkeys won this weekend but it was certainly an enjoyable and entertaining weekend.

Considering the BLUE, the RED may be questionable.....:D

I'd suspect he was somebodies "pet" that they turned out. But I agree, it's probably not going to go well this fall for him. I hate to see people "domesticate" a wild animal then turn it out. I suppose you could always go buy a HOT PINK or HUNTER'S ORANGE dog collar and put it on him....... :D

That's pretty neat but kinda sad too . Like you said, won't be too tough for someone to arrow this guy.

I'm betting that was a pet deer too. Hopefully if he is not found his instincts will kick in before the fall. If not, he's likely going to end up on someone's tailgate.

first who you play with in your tent is your business, kind of dont ask dont tell.

second you would be doing that deer a favor if you would scare the h#!! out of it,and send it packing like a jackrabbit to the hills.

it would be a paintball deer for me. it would sting and teach it to be afraid of humans.

Very nice pic and cool experience.

I don't think that that is a BB. I think that is going to be a racked buck, possibly 1 1/2. BB's are fawns that are born in the spring and roughly 6 mo old in the fall. If he is a BB, he sure lost his spots fast!

Shenandoah national park in VA has a lot of deer that come right up to you. If it were legal you could hunt deer with an apple and a hammer in hand.
