I love the idea of using the LW sticks and hangon to achieve this setup!!! question though....how on earth do you keep your linemans harness around the tree? do you disconnect at every branch? or just go with the flow? not being a goody-to-shoe/safety dork...im just deathly afraid of heights, but would love to open up the option to this type of setup!!
Yes and in almost forgot about this feature last weekend. I was in a tree that once I got up had more lean than I thought....stepped off, leveled it up, and...bam it was perfect.
This is coming from a ex die hard summit climber user!!! I always took my summit climber in with me everytime i would hit the woods and swore there was no way i was getting up a tree faster and quieter than i already was, but boy was i wrong!!!! I found a great deal on a LW Assualt and 4 sticks this year and havent touched my climber yet. The LW is lighter, quieter, and just as fast setting up. I have climbed straight trees, crooked trees, trees with limbs, trees without limbs. I of course will be using my climber alot more during the rut because its alot more comfortable to me for the all day sits and i can sleep in it. During rifle season i'll only be able to use my climber because we climb atleast 40 feet up trees to watch cut overs so the LW wont do the job there but i will be sticking with the LW loc-on and sticks for my bow hunting run and gun set up during bow season for now on. I plan to buy a couple more sets this summer as well.
Love my Lone Wolf stand and sticks. At first I was worried about the cost but since then I have bought another set and looking for a used 3rd. You can find great deals on craigslist, just look around. One thing though, make sure you practice before going out. Work out all the kinks so you can be set up in a timely manner with minimal noise.
That's some good advice. After reading this thread and watching the posted videos on how to use sticks with a hang on(thanks again to whoever posted those) I spent the morning climbing up and then back down and putting everything back together like I was going to pack out. I got my up the tree time down to a little over 10 minutes and my take down time down to 8. I was impressed. I still have some kinks to work out but I was better than I've ever been. I was still noisy as hell but that may have something to do with my current stand/sticks.
Some guys have camo tape on their sticks, I think LastOneOut had a picture. That helps reduce some noise and you can also buy rubber to stick on to certain spots that make a lot of contact. Can't be cursing at the stand either, that never helps.
Yessir! If noise is an issue just slow down certain steps have higher risk for clanking as I am sure you know.
The noise is the reason I camo taped my sticks- it turns and metal "ping" noise to a low dull "thud". Just have to be mindful of the buckles when hanging your sets.
This is more what I was looking for I'll give it a try and also laying my sticks on their side. I'll have to work out the "rattle bugs" from straps, buckles, etc. I can't have even a little rattle when I'm hiking it makes me crazy... :D Thanks for your help fellas.
I stack my stack my sticks the way LW says and do the figure 8 with the strap then use my easy hang strap to strap my pack and jacket to the stand and i have no noise at all as long as its all tight. I did take the camo duck tape and tape my sticks to ensure that there is no clanking or other noises from them!
I have a Lone Wolf assault hand climber for sale with free shipping (UPS) $300. Used one time, took it out of the box yesterday. PM me if your interested.
I love my LW hang-on but as everyone has said it takes practice to get the setup down to a reasonable amount of time. It took me 25 mins opening morning and I was sweating my balls off. I have now gotten that time down to around 10 mins with very minimal effort.
this sounds like me to a "T"!! I swear by my summit, but man its like carrying a dam box truck on my back it's so big. Im really thinking of getting the assault n stick combo, but I am deathly afraid of heights, (like I shake putting up a 20' ladder stick while using a lineman's harness) im sure with practice I can get over this,, just like using the viper, but when you guys set up sticks around branches, how do you stay attached to the tree? or do you?
