After seeing several bucks pushing does this evening, I finally had a decent buck get close enough for a shot. 25 yards broadside, I'm confident I put a good shot on him. Blood trail was great. We trailed it roughly 400 yards and still no dead buck. We backed out and will return in morning. We found three pieces of lung on the blood trail I can't believe we didn't find him yet. Anyone else out there ever have this happen. I'm not real proud of myself right now. I want to be still tracking deer but landowner wanted to quit so we didn't screw up the woods for his morning hunt. Btw lots of mature bucks on move this evening and all were trailing does.... It's about to get really crazy out there fellas!!!
A lung shot deer can go a lot farther than you think. But 400 yards is pretty crazy. Sounds to me like maybe you pushed him? how long did you wait after the shot?
Waited for about 40 mins odd thing is we did not find arrow so I hope it passed through. The way the blood trail was I believe it passed and hope we find thee arrow in morning as well as the buck
hopefully you find him in the morning. As a rule of thumb if i don't see them go down i give them time. If i knew i lung shot the deer and didn't see him go down i would have gave it a few hours just to be sure because it can't hurt anything to wait to long but it can hurt going in to early but good luck and hopefully you find him in the morning
Good luck finding him tomorrow, next time if ya don't see him go down wait a couple hours minimum after arrow inspection if one...if he's dead he'll still be there in a couple hours. Good luck keep us posted!
My doe went 75ish yards from where she was double lunged. Sounds like you only got one lung. They can go a long way on one lung. I also agree that if you got one lung, you bumped him up while tracking.
i double-lunged a 9-pt @ 20 yrds w/ my Gator Broadhead. He went 30 yards and left a blood highway. Now, by "double-lunging", I mean that expandable went right thru the middle of both lungs and left a bloody mess inside.
they have an amazing will to live, have seen deer run right through the thickest clumps of brush like nothing with blood pouring out both sides, but it does sound like he was bumped if he went 400 yards without falling over, I mean unless you see them crash its always a good idea to give them an hour or better at least that's what id do but good luck and hopefully you find him
