I too am headed out tonight. Should be interesting with almost 20 mph winds. I am going to a new set that I hung a couple weeks ago and I have a nice buck on trail cam that has been hanging out in the area. Hoping he decides to stop by and see me!
Went out last night. Got in 3 hours before dark with my dad. 20 minutes of shooting time left and he is walking out. I was close enough to him that I knew he didn't shoot. His vision is bad and he was trying to turn his light on his sight. Instead he was moving his windage which he didn't know existed. At least it made sense why we left early. Ha. Only saw 1 doe, but lots of cover for the deer this time of year as always. Saw some turkeys too. Out again tonight and in the morning. Weather is really nice. Little windy, but can't complain.
My dad shot doe and I was able to watch arrow go through doe with binocs. Pretty cool. The doe ran and died right by my stand. Looked like the doe had a fawn and 1 1/2 year old. I shot the 1 1/2 year old. My dad watched me shoot it with his binocs. Really cool to see complete pass through with binocs. Both deer boned out in fridge. Ready for Iowa game. Down with the badgers. I know we got some sconnies here.
I'm headed out for my first hunt this evening. I'm going to hunt in the standing corn overlooking a waterway. This spot has been good to me in the past. I do most of my hunting from the ground, so I'm pretty excited about tonight.
So I was walking to my tree stand and I have to walk this path through the woods that leads to this meadow area. My buddy and I decided to not mow off the meadow this year so the grass has got about 7 feet tall. Well every time I go to that meadow I end up seeing turkeys running around. So as I came up to it I really studied the meadow but couldn't see anything. I was walking along the edge when about 100 yards away I saw one pecking around. I made sure to have some tall grass between me and it and started slowing walking toward it crouched down. When I got about 50 yards away I poked my head up and couldn't see anything. I crouched down again and walked up to 40 yards. Poked my head up there and saw not just one turkey but several. I practically crawled up to 30 yards which is where I felt comfortable shooting. As I stood up I came to full draw. Much to my amazement there was probably 15 turkeys standing right in front of me. I picked one out of the group and shot her. Dropped her right in her tracks. I ran up to grab her and when I did, I had turkeys flying all over the place. It felt really good to finally tag a turkey after buying a tag the past 12 years. I always said that I would end up mounting the first archery turkey that I shot and that's what I plan on doing with this one. Sorry for the long story but it was one of my proudest moments I have had as a bowhunter! Hope everyone else is enjoying their time in the woods!
Had a great weekend up in the tree. I passed on a younger 7pt that would have been my first bow buck and first kill on film for a chance at one of two 120-130" bucks in the area. Ended up seeing the big 8pt an hour later but there was never a shot, he stayed away The two bucks I was hoping to see: This is the one I saw, but he stayed 60yds out through lots of brush End the end, I saw a decent amount of deer activity, Dad shot a doe, I saw turkeys, coyotes, and countless other critters..
I have always believed that you do not need to shoot something to have a fantastic time in the woods. I would take a weekend like yours any time!
hunted everyday this weekend, had a big nine I have been after at 55 yards in the rain Saturday, thought it was gonna happen, then he turned and went the other way. miserable weather all weekend rain, and 20-30 mph wind, but any time your in a tree stand is better than 95 percent of the other stuff! good luck to all the guys getting out this week!
Good luck Andrew! I am hoping tomorrow morning I can get back out in the stand. I have been spending the majority of my time in a tractor pulling around an auger cart.
Heat came back today 75 degrees here now...turned down 6pt and little doe last night..buddy saw 11 on Saturday evening Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk
I learned a valuable lesson.. A week ago today, just before a storm front and cool down, my #1 bucks should up in broad daylight. He hung around for 2 hours. This is the first time I have seen him come in when other deer were in the area. I was on the road working. I hope he does it again.
