Cant exactly find the right answer to my question when searching so I figured id make a new post.

Please don't let this turn into a huge mech vs. fixed debate. Me personally, I like to shoot fixed blades.

This question is for my dad though. He has shoulder problems and will only be pulling 45 lbs this year. 50 at the absolute MAX. He needs new broadheads. With such a low draw weight, should he be using a mechanical or fixed BH? I'm thinking Rage KE (now the "SS") for mech or slick tricks for fixed as I like slick tricks. But I don't know the science behind which would be better. At only 45#, he isn't going to be punching through a shoulder no matter what. So there goes that. So should he go mechanical to get the most damage done or will it not be enough speed to open it effectively? I completely realize a perfect shot, no matter what the head, is a dead deer. But im not talking perfect shot, im talking possibly hitting an off side shoulder or hitting both ribs, part of the shoulder, etc.

If it matters, he is shooting the real skinny Pile Drivers.

45# is more than enough bow for deer. I recommend fixed because it requires less KE to pass through than a mechanical. Mechanicals use a significant amount of the arrows energy to open on impact as well and the larger cutting surface creates more drag. I personally feel that light bows and arrows paired with mechs are a no no. This difference will really become apparent on a marginal shot, bone, or a quartering shot where penetration is more important. Any fixed blade broad head will work just fine.

I think his set up will have a huge impact. Certain bows at 45 or 50 could have more energy then my set up at 67. Especially if he has a long draw length.

To me the lower the weight means the lighter the arrow, so more reason NOT to use mechanicals. I use Exodus BH and would have no issues shooting them at even 40#.

45# bow, 28" draw, and those super thin Pile Driver arrows. Also, drop away if that matters.

Meant more what bow. Someone could shoot an rpm 360 or full throttle at 45 or 50 and get a little less if not more momentum and kinetic energy than me.

I' ve killed about two dozen deer with low poundage bows. Down to about 40lbs draw weight and 35-38 ft lbs of KE.
I use the big, older style Muzzy 125 grain heads.

My advice is to stay away from mechanicals with under 55 lbs of draw weight. A mechanical doesn't stack the odds in your favor in that situation, quite the opposite.

Then I would recommend some cut in contact fixed bladed heads like the montecs or hellrazors

A complete pass thru is very important for trailing and assessing the quality/location of the shot. Fixed is the only way to go with low poundage,IMO.

Assuming shots of 25 yards or less, go with the 125grain as Well.

hard to beat a slick trick standard. hog down in less than 20 yards with 50# bow and the old carbon fury arrow. I'm sold on the complete pass thru..
