Boy, I feel like crap. Last summer some nitwit dumped out three lab mix pups out here and I adopted them rather than shoot them or haul them off elsewhere. I've been training them to shed hunt but they have always had a compunction to run off, stay gone a while...like a few hours and then come home. So I bought shock collars to try to curb their habit and help train them because they are pretty free spirited (never really was a lab fan). Training was going okay and making progress, one of them in particular was a pretty darn good hunter. FF to yesterday, I was working on a bush hog mower and let them out to get some exercise without their collars. I finished fixing the mower and they had yet to come back (like 2hrs). One finally meandered in about 4 pm and another about 7pm....the third one (the best hunter of course) never came back. I looked for them from around 3pm on all over the farm and again this morning I looked until this afternoon. I walked the entire fence line of the farm and searched around all the ponds and fields and even went over on the neighbors. Also drove around the blocks to the east and west and south....not a single sign of her anywhere. I'm afraid a local dog pack I have seen all last fall on camera may have gotten her or maybe yotes. Fearing the worst and not a damn thing I can do about it. After keeping dogs all my life, this is the first time I have ever lost one....sucks balls. I'm disgusted, tired and just plain grossed out. I've never had dogs that I couldn't train to stay within sight of the house or at least on the surrounding 300 acres.....disgusted. Sorry for the vent.
Wow sorry to hear that! What a bummer! Hopefully it works out and she comes home. I got my fingers crossed for ya!
I lost a dog once for 4 days, I just kept looking and eventually found her stuck in a culvert pipe about 400 yds from the house. You just never know what they get into to.
We once had our dog stolen... We drove and drove and finally found her 20 miles from the house, 3 days later, in the middle of no where, sitting on some construction dirt piles. After that, I have learned there is always hope.
I hope she comes back for you. That sucks and I know how you feel. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I'm just heartsick at the moment, I get more attached to my dogs, deer and animals in general then most people do. I just keep thinking about the doe I shot with my bow last fall that got up and ran into a thicket of buckbrush (a 30 acre thicket) I knew I couldn't wade around in and find the deer so I came home and got her and she tracked it down in like ten minutes, straight to it...the deer had only gone in about 30 yards, ran a total of about 70....Mercy found it slick as a button. She ate well that night for sure. Hopefully she comes back yet, she's a gamey little snot...they are all medium sized dogs now grown. Two of the dogs roaming around though in this pack of three are huskys or something...big burley bastards. I didn't shoot them because I hate to shoot someones dog but I wish now I had dispatched them last October.
Now don't go killing someone elses dogs because you have an assumption they could have gotten your dog... Have they gotten into it before? Is this pack of dogs known for terrorizing other peoples animals, etc? I don't believe huskies are the type of dog to roam around terrorizing other pets, etc. We had a half wolf, half huskie for years and never had a problem. I hope she just ends up coming home to you... Good luck.
No, I don't have any evidence those dogs had anything to do with mine missing or attacking other dogs. I did walk into them this morning while looking for mine and they were eating a dead cow on the neighbors property. Looked like the cow died last night sometime as it was only a little tore up at the arse from the dogs. I don't know if they killed it or what but they act ornery as they laid their ears back and then ran from me. The nearest neighbor is that may own these dogs is over a mile away across country. I almost think they are just wild dogs. These dogs chased deer all last season and I'm still getting pics of them roaming around my feeders. I've got them on camera chasing deer across my fields. That alone pretty much warrants shooting them in my mind but like I said I hate to shoot a dog. I had three pit bulls came in a few years ago that I let roam for the same reason and they did end up cornering my Rottweiler mix and nearly killing him. Luckily my other dog came and got me and I heard the fight so grabbed the 30-30 and went to see what was going on and ended up shooting two of them after they not only chased my dog to me but acted like they intended on taking me as well. That delayed reaction cost me $300 vet bill and the eventual early death of that dog. I just don't think she would have run off and stayed gone over night without something happening to her. I hope I'm wrong
I’ve gotta tell ya that I feel your pain. Bear with me on this one now…. Many—many-- years ago my Dad trained bird dog as a side business to his regular business. This was in the 70’s now. He had a painting and wall paper business for 37 years. Anyway--- all I can remember from the time I was 6 or so until 13 was that my job in life was to feed dogs and make sure the results of that food never stayed in the kennel more than a day or two. One of our ***** English setters had a litter of 13. Now that’s a bunch of pup’s! Long story short--- dad asked me to be momma for number 13 that was a runt. Little did I know what a gift that was! He told me that it was my dog to raise and train! Daddy always went to Kansas every year in November and December to bird hunt. He had made friends with some good folks in the first few years he went out there to hunt for himself. Later all the locals wanted to hunt with him. That started his new business! He started taking the best new dogs we had coming up every year in the early 70’s , so they would get the experience. Usually Daddy only came home with a half a truck load of dogs. They sold themselves easily. Guess whose dog didn’t come home after all the training I put into that runt throw away! Yep my little number 13! Moral of the story---- They are all special, but just dogs till you have history with them! If you connect with a dog they will forever be in your heart! Hope she finds her way home bud! Be happy that you had the time you did… Special ones don’t come around very often… Sometimes they come home --- you need to be there to feed them!
A dog without boundaries will wander, my dog..like most..will follow his nose and ears if unrestrained. Hope it works out.
Thanks for sharing....good story! Jeeze I think I'm cursed today....it's thundering and lightning and we just had about 1/4" of hail...good grief.
I am truly sorry and can relate. but keep hope she might come back. Any chance she might have pups and holed up with them somewhere?
Well, no....not until now anyway, lol. I had not had them spade yet but I keep them penned up in a shed all the time and if she had ever come in, I missed seeing it. It is possible that she's in now and I just didn't notice and didn't think to look yesterday before I let them out. I had been getting along pretty good letting them out and not running off....thought I had that problem about solved until yesterday. But that may be an answer...she could have been in and be running with other dogs now that she's in and will be back (PG of course)...(great :eyeroll but I'd rather have he back and have to deal with puppies than to think she's laying dead somewhere...no doubt.
That's really tough man...hope it all works out for ya...that helpless feeling is awful....i feel for ya...good luck Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
