As always, very nice. What body and lens do you shoot with again?

Thanks a lot for the compliments, much appreciated.
    - these were taken with a Nikon D300 and a Nikon 200-400 f/4 VR lens.

OK, very neat. I looked at the D300 when I was looking for my first DSLR. How far were the bucks from you in the last picture? Looking hard at getting a zoom lens for my 7D, just not sure which one I want (see which one I can afford).

    Thanks again guys.
That last shot - it was probably over 100 yards to the deer - I was all the way zoomed at 400mm for that shot, plus I cropped this one a bit too.

Have you shot fixed focal length telephotos before? I REALLY want to get a solid telephoto, and it's probably between the old school 100-400 or the 300F4IS. The shots from the 300F4IS are much sharper, but I've often wondered about a lack of flexibility and reach.

On a side note, are these pictures taken on public land?

    Awesome as always.

Hey - thanks for the top 10 spot PT, much appreciated. Do you get the NY Outdoor news? The last cover shot of the pheasants was mine.. I've actually had 4 cover shots on there now.

Matt - Iv'e never shot a prime lens - I started out with a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens and loved it, but it just didn't have enough reach. I then got a 2x teleconveter but I wasn't very impressed with it.

So I spent many hours trying to decide on a prime 300mm f/2.8 or the 200-400mm f/4. I finally decided on the zoom - just figured it would suite my shooting better. The zoom does come in handy I use it quite often , of course it's at the expense of losing a few f stops. The f/2.8 would be a lot better at dawn and dusk shots, but I make do with the f/4. Plus is is nice having the extra 100 mm.
What's the f stops on the 100-400 your looking at? I'm not that familar with Canon's lenses.

As for your side note - most of these were on private land but the one of the 2 bucks together was on state land.

Got anymore questions just give me a shout - I'll be glad to help if I can.
    Take care
    Dave

Awesome shots Dave! Wish I knew how to use my camera for shots like that. Need to learn so I can start getting some great pics!

Yeah, me too. I wish I even knew some of the terminology. What's an F-stop? :D

It's f4.5-5.6. It's the old school "push/pull" zoom as well.
