After shooting at the GTG this year i am going to try to pick up some more speed. I was shooting the Easton st excells and getting around 216 fps. Would it be wise to switch to a lighter arrow or would this really kill my kinetic energy? I was looking at the GOLD TIP ULTRALIGHT and the gold tip GOLD TIP ULTRALIGHT ENTRADA. By the way I'm shooting 55 lbs and 27.5 inches. Let me know what you guys think and if you have any suggestions please share them.
A young man I help with bowhunting has a 25" DL and his arrow goes right at 200 fps. He has had pass throughs on all the deer he has shot. I suppose the longbow would pass through faster than his too, but.........
Isaac- It was a blast shooting with you on Saturday. If I remember correctly you mentioned wanting to shoot flatter. You can go to Easton's website to look up their charts to see what arrows you can shoot with your Single cam and specific draw length depending on what weight heads you are using. You should be right on the line for the 400/500 arrow size with a 100gr. head so staying with your 400 would likely be best for tunability. You can also send a PM to Mechdoc or any of the other guys that have the programs for KE and Speed based on your setup. You will need to factor in what is most important for you for a good balance between hunting and target. For me 90% of what I need is a flat shooting hunting setup, but of course I was crucified when I asked this very question a year ago on another site. Remember that in most cases you will not likely take a shot over 30 yards while hunting, so your current setup might work fine until you get into a newer rig down the road do. Whatever you do remember that you have some great guys on here to reach out to including Scott(Buckeye) who is a wealth of knowledge. You are shooting a setup that will drop deer without a problem, you also don't want to end up needing two guys to pull your arrows out of foam targets
Thanks for the info guys, i guess i shouldn't be so concerned on the speed and more about practicing and shot placement.
Exactly dude, I was just bustin you chops earlier, with the right arrow combination and shot placement you will kill any and all deer that you want. Speed won't mean squat if you cant put the arrow where it needs to go, and when you start stressing your form and set up you will loose accuracy in a hurry.
The guys all make points that I support fully. Hitting the mark with what you have is what you should be more concerned with. The race for speed often creates more problems (form, forgiveness, tuning, noise) than it solves (range estimation errors). That being said, the best way you're going to pick up speed with your 55# outfit (assuming you stay with the same arrows and they are still spined right) is to increase it to 60#; more energy in = more energy out. But it's not worth the loss in performance that you'll suffer if you over bow yourself. Don't increase the weight if you're not ready for it.
I am hoping to crank my bow up here soon in the next couple weeks, But i am in the market for new arrows so what would you guys recommend?
Will (iamyourhuckleberry) was shooting some Radial X Weaves on our bear hunt that I was pretty darn impressed with. We were shooting blunts at a log from 25 yards and the darn thing would not break. He had to shoot a rock with it to demonstrate how they break clean without any slivers. My Axis had similar performance but broke on the log after about the 8th shot. The thing is the X Weaves cost way less than the Axis and you don't have to deal with that damn stupid HIT insert! http://pse-archery.com/prod.php?k=56063&sk=56063&u=PRE2
You know, I dont even get on this site anymore without having a notepad handy. I love this place. Lots of good info
TOTALLY!!! I've picked up more great hunting, shooting, and setup advice from these guys than "those other sites" combined over the past couple years... most of the other sites will tell ya flat out "you need a new bow", but these guys are dead right imho, shot placement is key...
I don't know if you've made any decisions yet, but I use those ultralight entrada's on my back-up/3D bow and even though they are cheaper, they shoot just as fine as my Pro hunters. (and I killed a doe with them last winter with no issues) I shoot them from a 60# Ally set probably at 58#. Sometimes you can pick up little bits of speed without sacrificing a lot. What kind of stuff do you have on your string? Is all of it needed?
I think I'm going to go with the Entradas, To answer your question i only have a string loop and string-less peep on my string so that's pretty much the bare minimum. Also today i got my bow turned up to sixty, It greatly effected the pin gab and now i am very pleased with my setup.
