I don't want to spend a lot on this as I won't shoot it a lot. I'm only buying it to do a little coyote hunting after bow season ends. I've been looking at some of the DPMS. They have one for around the $700 range. I don't want to spend more than $800.

    Suggestions?

I just want something cheap to shoot as in ammo costs. I know I won't have a super high quality gun and that's fine by me.

A DPMS would work fine for what you're looking for. As long as you get a mil-spec AR you can replace parts later. AR15s are like tinker toys, not only can you build/customize on them, doing so is half the fun of owning own.

Thanks for the response. Like I said I won't shoot it to death so I don't want to spend 12 or 1300 on one.

There's a DPMS at Walmart for 619 and bass pro has the DPMS Oracle for 699. I may look into these more.

Some other decent low priced Ar's are bushmaster. You can find some online with red dots for under 700.

I have seen windham weaponry for decent prices as well. They are made at the old bushmaster factory about 20 minutes from my house.

I've considered buying one of those. Do you have any experience with them?

I do not have any experience with ar's at all,but the local Walmart has the Windham weaponry for around $800. They have the DPMS for $619 as well. I have a poly lower I bought during the big AR scare and still waiting to buy an upper. Leaning towards a Rock River upper actually.

I have a DPMS oracle and I love it. I put a Vortex 3X9-50 scope on it and it shoots great. I too use it for coyote hunting and for a $750 AR, I was surprised about the grouping and how nice it shoots!! If your looking at one, you wont be disappointed!!!

    Good Luck!!

What makes the Oracle different than the sportical?

The only other suggest I can offer besides the great points already given by others is to survey how you will be hunting the coyotes.

Will it mainly be setting up on them, if so, the weight of the gun won't be a critical factor.

If you will be spotting and stalking, I'd go with something as light as possible.

After putting my optics and mounts on my gun, which does have a full floating quad rail and 18" barrel, I am already seeing why the weight of the gun can make a huge difference depending on the type of hunting you will do.

Just a suggestion and thought. I know it may not change which gun you buy, but it could change what accessories you will be putting on the gun in the future.

Looks as though the Sportical has a slick side upper. It lacks a round deflector and dust cover for the chamber. The Oracle upper is forged, the Sportical upper is extruded.

This is just an assumption, but I'd say the barrels are probably the same between the two. As far as any other differences between the two uppers (bolt, bolt carrier group, buffer tube, etc) , I don't know.

The lowers are forged out of the same material so there shouldn't be much of a difference between the two there.

If it was me, I would go with the Oracle over the Sportical. You can swap out a lot of different parts down the road if you aren't satisfied but if you go with the Sportical, you can never add a deflector or dust cover. Just my opinion

Spikes Tactical and Model 1 Sales are awesome places to start a build. I am personally looking at a STAG Model 3T.

DPMS Sportical from Walmart has had some good reviews. Same with the Bushmaster all Carbon Fiber AR15 from sporting goods stores. Both are great gun makers and I would trust either of them in a heartbeat.

Skip the Stag and go with the Spike's, they make the best parts for the dollar.

Does anyone have a Diamondback DB-15. I saw them on cheaperthandirt.com for $592. I have never heard of them before and can't really find any reviews on them either.

The M&P sport is another good one to get in the door with.
As far as building one it's really hard to beat the price, quality and convenience from palmetto state armory.
As far as cheaperthandirt, do yourself a favor and never order from them.
Last year they're pricing was through the roof, $100 for a pmag.

IF it just for coyote hunting honestly save some cash and get a Savage .223 bolt action or the like. ARs are "cool" and "fun" but nothing beats a bolt for hunting in my opinion.

IF you want a semi-auto for fun/self-defense/bug out or whatever else, I've slowly become a bigger and bigger fan of the AK platform over ARs. Really digging the Century Arms C39 (100% fully made in USA)...can't wait for the shop to get one in so I can see one first hand.

Lot of guys come into the shop wanting an AR for "coyote" hunting...when they truly just want an AR for whatever reason. In those cases I do recommend an AR, however if truly hunting is the primary purpose there are vastly more "better" options in my opinion that when zero'd in with practice will out shoot an AR all day long for one shot and done hunting.
