Whats the best way to go about this? I don't know many farmers and was wondering how you guys acquire land. Would it be a good idea to just drive up to a random farm and ask the owners? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
I have done that for duck and goose hunting. 90% of the time it is no problem. Also a few days after the hunt I will usually buy a small thank you gift and take it to them. Helps insure next time you ask they will let you again. But for deer it could be a different story.
Hey Dan, I am in the same spot. I have a great spot of land but thanks to overcrowding by my neighbors, the spot has turned rather sour. So here is my plan.... I have gone on to google earth and found woods that would be good spots to hunt, places with water, cover and an abundant food source. My next step that I am doing now is to drive by these places and do a little scouting (from my vehicle). Lastly, just go knock on doors, be polite, offer up to help out around the property... Keep in mind it's a numbers game. The problem here in Indiana is that land for hunting is getting very scarce.
Thanks. I went on google earth as well and found some nice land that is on a river about 15 min from me. It looks like it could be a very good piece of land.
You will not get permission if you don't ask. By asking, you have a lot to gain and nothing to lose. Here's a tip...... Make the Misses happy. Usually, the farmer don't care if you hunt but if his wife is against it, you won't get in. Get to know them. Start by asking to hunt turkeys or varmints. If you get this far, start helping out with chores or bring some gifts (women love candles, hand lotion etc). Then become friends with them. It won't be long before you are invited to hunt deer. Good luck.
Very true Greg. I will probably take a nice drive into the country tomorrow. Hopefully the ladies have little gardens the deer are getting into so that she wont care if I shoot a few!!! ;-)
