Our desktop PC has.....well.........died. Deader 'n a hammer. So, we're looking to replace it. If I had my way, it would be a Mac.......but I'm married so we all know that's not gonna happen. Anywho, we will be using it for music (the girl's iPod's ya know), internet surfing and homework. The wife likes the HP Touchsmart, but I don't know much about them. The last PC we had was an HP and I wasn't a big fan.... So anyway, ya'll got any suggestions??
I just got an acer for work. It seems fine, but I don't like it nearly as well as the Vaio I'm on, now. Personal preference, I'm sure. But the Sony just seems more well-built. I'm a laptop guy, though. I've never used a desktop much.
Only thing I can suggest is that I tend to get some of the best deals on www.newegg.com Check it out...
HP are good machines we sell them at work. My old place used dells, and they were sweet machines also. HP Dell Sony Are all good brands.

Mo I'm in the same position. I want a Mac but it's taking a little work on the wife. I've not completely sold her on the idea, but I think I'm making some inroads. :D
Get a MAC...I'm a computer guy, they dont' crash and virtually no viruses. Its worth the money to spend..trust me on this. PC's, they are good but I would get a MAC, it's worth it in the long run.
If you don't decide on a MAC, get a Dell dude. It's just like everything else in the world. you get what you spend.
get a Mac... end of story.. if your new to them it may take a little while to get used to it and you may not think its awsome at first, but after getting used to it they are 10x easier and much much better.
I have a Dell, downstairs (used it for years). Hard drive crashed, last fall, so I had to get it re-configured. Cost me $50.....and it's good to go. While it was down, I talked to the guys at my old co. (IT guys), asked them what to buy. They use Dell's exclusively, and told me to (for the $$) buy the Sony. I got the $700 Vaio. Love it. I don't like it "better" than the Dell. But I don't like it "less" (even though I paid less).
I gotta agree with Jeff, I've used HP, Dell, Acer, _______, etc....and no computer compares to my Sony Vaio. Awesome machine, but I too am referring to the laptop. FWIW, I hate Macs.
Dell's customer service has gone down hill with their company growth (at least in my experience). IBM is about as stable and reliable, no-thrills laptop you can get. Granted, they tend to be geared more toward the corporate market, but nonetheless, good stuff. HP and Sony get my vote, although I'm typing this on a Gateway, and we've been happy with this. Macs are kind of fun, but I don't buy into the hype. I've used G3s, G4s, the new iMacs, Macbooks, etc, and while they do run fine once you get used to them, they're still priced too high for my liking (laptops are a little different than the desktops, however). The virus issue is certainly a valid point since Mac has a far less share in the homeowner market, and as such, there's obviously less viruses. Put 1,000,000 people in a Ford, and 1,000 in a Chevy, let them drive for a year, and tell me the distribution of issues people have between the two:D Plus, most viruses/issues people have are self-inflicted. I bet the majority of people here are on computers right now logged in with the adminstrator account, huh?
Just personal preference...I've used them a lot around campus, I just can't get used to their operating system being accustomed to a PC and windows for so long. i view computer brands about the same as the Chevy vs Ford thing, they all work fine just what you are used to usually is the "best".
I've been through quite a few. I'd go with Sony, Dell, or a Toshiba, no particular order. I just thought they were all well made machines. Ok, maybe the Toshiba was a little better. I used that lap top HARD and it took the beating for years. At Dell they threw a lot of "extra" stuff on and charged me.
I agree, nothing but problems with Dell. We had those for the last 8-9 years, and my Acer is a big time upgrade.
