    Hey y'all,

I'm just getting into archery and bowhunting. Still don't know too much about different bows and what to look for. Was thinking of buying a used one for my first bow just to get the hang of it. Any comments or suggestions on a particular bow/brand? Should I not buy used? I want something that isn't over the top but can still take out a buck no problem (when the time comes). Thanks!

First question, how much do you have to spend?

Go to your ilocal shop. Shoot, shoot, shoot. Ask them and they might even have a used bow or two. Also try a pawn shop after you know what you are looking for.

Mission bows are great bows. Check them out.

Thanks for the info! I'd like to spend around $400 or less for a complete setup... According to the guys at Cabela's, that'll start me off with a decent setup, but who knows if they're just trying to sell me on something. I'd obviously be happy spending less than that if possible

You can get a great starter bow for the price you are looking at. The guys at Cabela's were real helpful with me in finding a bow. They didn't get pushy until I said I couldn't buy that day.

I picked up a used name brand bow on eBay. Bid on a few but stopped when they went over my price range. Finally got 1 in my range. Took it for a new string and the shop owner let me shoot it with a few kinds of releases and picked up the 1 I liked along with 6 arrows. Been hunting (not often enough because I have to wait for invites from friends) and KILLED the only deer I was allowed to kill :-)
I'm trying to hold off on a new bow as long as I can because of kids and marital bliss.
    Good luck!

PS. I have to keep putting it out there: I'm a good bow hunting Buddy looking for a quiet place to hunt for some meat or my 1st buck, I follow all the rules of the DNR and host, willing to do some work on the land, and like hunting during the week within a couple hours of Chgo's western burbs.

You can get a pretty good bow for around that. Something like a bear, diamond, pse, mission, etc. You could go the used route and get a bigger name. Check out craigslist, a lot of people will come down on their price or trade for something.
