I am looking for a gps that I can use in real heavy cover. I have an old garmin etrex that doesn't work at all in the heavy tree canopy. So before I spend the money on a new unit that may or may not work maybe someone could point me in the right direction. My main use will be to mark my route in so I can fallow it out and mark easy crossing areas for ravines, creeks, and hard areas to pass. the areas I'm in have little to no visual of the the sky through the tree canopy.

I've got the same problem with my Gramin etrex vistaC , waiting forever for the satelites to pinpoint me . Definately thinking of getting a new GPS , preferably another Garmin .... just newer lol . I've been looking at the Garmin GPSMAP 62 , Will see how my search goes and update if I make a purchase .

If you get a new Garmin with "H" in the model number that means it has the new high intensity antenna. Like you I had an old Garmin Extrec Legend and like you I had trouble in heavy cover.

I just purchased a few months ago the Extrec Summit HC and love it. It has the electronic compass build in (no need to be moving for it to work, you turn the unit and the compass spins like a real compass).

Costed me around $160 on Ebay.

Like I said anything in the Garmin line with an H means you are good to go. Satellite acquisition is very fast even in buildings and the basement.

Thanks Brad , thats a great help , i really like the compactness of the etrex models , so going off what you just said , it looks like I'm sticking with them ;)
