I am a build your own guy as well...and that is primarily why I never got one until some website work came along and I got one built in exchange....however from what I have seen on the range Smith makes a good solid consumer based AR platform that the common shooter will enjoy...as does Windham Weaponry honestly. We have a WW (Windham) as a rental and it has performed flawlessly (and even when it has gotten way too dry due to mass rentings sometimes). If I were going to buy a stock "out the box" AR it would probably be a Rock River or Colt...their fittings are solid from what I've seen and everyone I know loves the ones they got....but price point the M&P line or some of the lines from WW are hard to beat.
I get building your own is probably the way to go but with my new job I can get a really good discount on pre built guns. So I'm looking for a pretty good gun to start out with and if I want to change things up in the future. I appreciate all the help. It's just were I'm sitting right now pre built is the route I'll be going. Sent from my iPhone
Rock river has some fantastic pre built guns. I own one and love it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm just not a fan of the carbine style forearm. You will want to change that a week after you get it. I would get something with a free float forearm. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I was shooting my M&P Sport model over the weekend. I didn't want to spend a lot, for the money, it's a great little gun. Grabagun.com has them for $566. Shoots anything you feed it, accurate and fun to shoot. My buddy is ordering one this week. Can't wait to kill some Yotes with it!
I'm looking for a upper to complete my build, been putting it off a while since that whole gun scare phase is almost finished. I'm working with a smith and Wesson MP 15 lower (159$) dpms lower kit with a few hours if polishing and fitting($60) and ace entry stock($90). So I'm looking at $360 right now. Probably gonna put another 600-700 into it to get exactly what I want. So I'll be at around $1000 for full gun including optics. And plus the enjoyment of building it myself. I saw some older post from you taking about building yours. I'll probably eventually work on building my own but for not kat just stock stuff and getting going. Yeah I've read that the free floating forearm is nicer, and it can help with accuracy too. I was looking at some with a quad rail so I could put accessories on it. Sent from my iPhone
If your looking for a free float rail BCM is having a pretty decent sale goin on right now with a lot of different rails. Seems the trend is now to get away from quad rails so you can find good prices on them. Somtimes you gotta type in Bravo Company manufactures to find their site.
Another thing that not sure if got mentioned or you knew but if you do go with free float rail it will fit over a gas block so like the M&P your looking at a longer rail will fit on it even though it comes with carbine length now. Dogfish is right though if you go with a short rail or handguard you'll want longer pretty quick. I out a mid length on the one I built and I've wanted to switch since its been done.
I did see that in a few things I've read online. What is the reason you guys don't like the short rail ? Sent from my iPhone
For me the only reason is since I have longer arms and the way I hold the rifle I need more for my hand to grab. I can shoot mine now pretty comfortably but if the mail was couple inches longer I'd like it more. I'm not really concerned with being able to put more accessories on it just need more to grip.
Gotcha that makes sense. I have some short arms lol but I probably won't have a ton of accessories but it will be nice to have the room and I like the look. Sent from my iPhone
Yea I probably would do it either way cause I also think looks little better. Had one was gonna buy other day for a really good price but waited and it was gone. I'm looking to change pretty much my whole upper though. Good luck though, if you thought getting stuff for a new bow was bad wait till you start looking at all the ways you can set up a AR.
Yeah, they're out there. COLT LE6920CMP-B AR15 Law Enforcement Carbine NIB : Semi Auto Rifles at GunBroker.com but as a couple others have recommended, both Daniel Defense and Rock River make great ARs. DPMS is a great value piece. All three are better than any Colt Gov Model or Bushmaster, IMO.
Yeah I've been looking around and there is a ton of stuff you can do with one to customize it. Sent from my iPhone
Just buy a star chamber brush. Works wonders. I you do a quick cleaning after every shoot it's no problem to clean a AR. If you run dirty ammo and don't clean it after every outing. It can be a pain. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ha idk why cause I'm usuall pretty good avout it but I have about 500 rounds through mine and haven't cleaned it. Your right though it'll be a pain.
Could you guys post some pictures of some of your sets and explain what you have on it? Id like to see what you guys are using. Im thinking about having a scope on top and then getting a red dot offset. Anyone run a setup like this before ?
