Im looking at getting an AR in the near future and was wondering what you guys have used and what works well? I've looked through some older threads and found stuff here and there. I see a lot of guys building their own, but if you had to buy a pre built one what would you go with?

Are you looking to do anything specific with it? Like varmit hunting or just target shooting? Like everything also gotta have a budget idea. Since the ban craze isn't as bad you can find some good ones for decent price.

Can always change things later which is a good thing since will let you keep initial cost down.

DPMS makes good rifled but if it was me I'd try to get a smith and wesson mp15.

I'll probably get some varmint hunting in with it but I will be target shooting as well. I was looking at the Smith and Wesson MP15 and it looks nice but didn't know much about it. As far as pricing goes Im not really worried about pricing right now. I can get good pricing on some more expensive guns. I want something that will be reliable and last awhile.

    Oly,

can you give us a price range? There are some nice $1000 ARs, but then there are $3500 ARs.
Also what will it be for? Plinking, 3 gun, target, hunting, self defense, SHTF, or safe queen?

Intended use and price range would make a big difference as to what I would recommend.

lol. Opened the thread to post, went to get a beer, and all these questions were answered in between all that.

If you are not worried about prices id get either a Daniel Defense or Noveske. The two are about as top of the line as you can get. I got my DD for a little under 1500 with just the rifle. Still working on building the Noveske.

Sorry I haven't seen any $3500 rifles. I guess I wasn't looking in the right places. Id say keep it under $1500, that should give you guys something to work with. I will be trying to take out some yotes and other pest on the farm as well as target shooting with some buddies.

    A DD @ $1500 is a helluva buy.
If I was in the market I'd be on that like a rat on a Cheeto.

Gotcha, then mp15 are pretty good rifles. Buddy has a couple and they're pretty accurate for what they are if ya top them with a good scope. I don't think you'd be disappointed at all.

If you really wanna get something that's a tack driver Larue Tactical makes some pretty sweet rifles. They're on the higher end of price though.

There's tons of options out there though. Rock River is good also.

Im still new to this so Im just trying to get a bunch of info and knowledge before I go off and buy something. I found some decent company but not really familiar with the features. Like what is the advantage of a longer barrel?

Longer barrel will be more accurate at longer range. The twist rate for the barrel effects accuracy too. Most are like a 1/7 or 1/8 but alot of the ones that are more for long range is 1/10 or better.

So the longer the barrel the more the round twist/spins before exiting which will keep it more stable in flight for longer distance.

Okay so a Smith and Wesson M&P 15 OR with 1/9 and a 16 inch barrel would pretty good?

Yea that would work pretty well. Wanna say mines a 1/7 16" barrel and its pretty accurate for couple hundred yards.

Honestly in my opinion unless your looking at shooting constantly over 350-400 yards a 16" barrel will work fairly well with some decent ammo and a good scope.

Yeah I don't really see myself shooting that distance consistently. I can get a decent scope for a pretty good price too but we will go into that later. Would 800 be a good price on the smith and wesson M&P 15 OR?

I would think that's a pretty good price. I haven't really kept up on what they're goin for these days but the the places around here are still selling AR's for 1000 or more for anything that not a 22.

IMO your going to spend the other 700$ on after market options. I would go a head an get a nicer setup.

Why do you say that? Because the price of the gun ? I don't know if you looked at it but it looks to be a pretty nice gun.

I would build one, nothing like knowing every moving part and building a rifle for your exact application. I would also not get wrapped up into names like Daniel Defense, their customer service is not a strong point of their brand from the experiences several friends have had. Spikes, Mega, Noveske, BCM and several other companies make solid lower and upper receivers. Spend the money and get a quality BCG from BCM, Spikes or Fail Zero. Barrels make the gun as well, White Oak, Rainer Arms and BCM have some killer barrels. I built a Spikes 18" 1/8 twist gun at the height of the scare for $1700.00 including optics and will throw it on a bench against any factory built DD, Noveske or BCM gun.

If you are dead set on a complete built gun there are a few places out there with complete Spikes Tactical guns, they have some of the best customer service and their BCM and LPK's are top notch with barrels that are pretty solid for the price. I have seen come complete guns from them in the 750-1100 range recently.
