Not that we need another acceptable yardage debate, but I stumbled across this post on FB this morning, and it caught my eye. I'm not posting this to undermine the success the hunter had, nor question his skill set. I have my own acceptable yardage, and he has his. I did wonder, however, what everyone thought with Elite placing their name next to a feat like this, and almost implying those who purchase their equipment can be capable of such shots as well. What are your thoughts? Should a company remain neutral on topics like this, or should they support all ethical kills and assume all shooters will be capable of fully understanding their own limitations in the field? Also, if it matters, that same hunter mentioned successfully taking a doe at 88yds this season with the same bow as well.
I think it is in poor taste and not a wise business move. A simple "heres a great Iowa buck!" Would have worked. All the kudos to the guy in the world for having that ability... But, not everyone has that, or the mind set to capacitate that. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
The post seems to suggest, hey own an Elite bow and you too can take 74 yard shots at bucks. In my opinion it is irresponsible especially coming from Elite Archery's Facebook page.
I've known Mark for several years. He can flat out shoot a bow. IMO, extreme long range archery is not the best thing to promote, but he did make the shots count.
IMO I think that if you can shoot that far you should be able to,just know your limits, but you shouldnt be going out and telling everyone else that they can do the same the first time they try to shoot at a deer that far...
I think you guys are spitting hairs and being overly critical. The truth of that matter is across the broad our equipment is better now then its ever before and that does translate in to being confident at longer rangers. For example the last mule deer I shoot him at a ranged 66 yards, before modern range finders I never would have attempted that shot. Furthermore I also wouldn't have taken that shot with the bows I was shooting 15 years ago. I watched Fred Bear videos of him flinging arrows successfully at game at similar distances what your making reference to in the FB post...the father of modern Bowhunting. I don't see the diffidence and I don't see this post advocating or promoting shooting at distances that one feels is impractical or unethical based on their skills and equipment. To be even more blunt I see guys that cant shoot worth a **** at even close distances...and I would take skilled archer making a longer shot any day if they are confident in the shot.
For the record I have no problem with an archer that is comfortable shooting that distance. I believe only the individual archer can determine what distances they are comfortable shooting. My problem is with a company giving the impression that it is the norm with a certain brand of bow. That is the way the post came across to me which I feel is irresponsible.
This is really an interesting topic. To have the confidence / ability to make that shot is an amazing accomplishment. That being said, the caption on the post attributes his success to elite producing the "best" bow and doesn't go into the countless hours of practice he undoubtably spends honing in his skill. I think it's safe to say he could do this with a number of different bows from various manufacturers. The challenge I see with Elite putting their name on this is not all hunters really "get it." Too many people think their equipment can compensate for lack of practice and simply don't put in the time. You would hope all hunters would use logic / ethics, but lets be real. We have all seen people do some very stupid things. That being said, obviously they want to be affiliated with hunters / archers who are capable with taking pretty amazing shots. But attributing success to a specific product is tricky in this case.
100% agree. I think both the company and hunter have a moral obligation to state that this is not a normal shot or a shot that the average hunter should consider taking. They should take responsibility in how they represent the sport and ethics behind hunting. They have to realize the effect of what they're saying and how the less experienced hunter may think "well if he can do it, why shouldn't I try". There seems to be way to much emphasis on speed and range. This whole "look how far and fast I can shoot at animals" is horrible for the sport IMO.
The problem with this post is the problem with lots of things in this world these days, PEOPLE. People and their lack of ability to be responsible. People will read this post- some people, not all- and like stated above, will assume that "hey I've got an X bow, now I can shoot X yards like X hunter guy does!". And again, like stated above, take no consideration for practice or a laundry list of things that actually could make them competent to take shots like those. Now im not advocating 75 yard shots either, but I don't blame elite or the hunter, their bow can do it, the hunter obviously could do it. Bottom line, don't half-*** it PEOPLE! I think saying what he said and taking the shot he did Is 100% Bull****!! Bow hunting Is becoming a shooting sport, not hunting. All too often pro shop owners too are promoting this crap.
I cant believe the amount of coddling an hand holding people feel is acceptable and needed these days. Take it one step further, a bow company should sell you a bow unless the buyer demonstrates acceptable proficiency...and lets send a company rep on every hunt to hold you hand also. While were at it when are we putting disclaimers on every arrow shaft? What a bunch of nanny staters this country is coming to.
There is not a person who has responded that doesn't wish they had made that shot on the buck. That the funniest part to me.
I can't see the vitals at 74yrds. I can't pick a hair at 74yrds. I would be shooting at the "deer" not the vitals. I would not even consider taking that shot. Do I wish I had shot that buck this year...sure. Would I wish I had a 74yrd opportunity? nope.
Would I like to have that buck, SURE! Am I going to take a 74 yard shot at it? No way because I'm not comfortable at that distance.
Who said that? You haven't the slightest clue. That's the funniest part to me. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
It's irrelevant. I'm not taking a 75 yard shot on a deer with my bow. Ever. People make a shoot or don't shoot call on a deer based on all the current circumstances crossed with their ethics. By the looks most guys on here won't be taking that shot. The REALLY funny part is most of the guys that WON'T take that shot are the same guys that know they could 12 ring it. Not a chance! I would love to have a chance at that buck. But I'm not letting an arrow fly at it from 74 yards away. Dang I'm not even letting one fly at 54 yards away. Just to far for my comfort and confidence. Not an ethical shot.
