I got a lone wolf hand climber this year. Was wondering what individuals who own this type of stand do from when they reach there hunting spot, to the time they reach there height in the tree, to coming down and leaving. It seems that every time i go out i do something different and would like to see what other people do, along with any short cuts or secrets to using this stand. Thanks
Me.... Secure hand climber to tree, secure base to tree (both at maximum upward angle). Climb to desired height, attach safety strap from harness to tree, pull up bow..hunt!
Don't know what more you'd be looking for.... I'll throw this tip your way though if you're new to the LW game: Where the bottom of the support arm attaches to the base of your stand (the black squarish tubing that the traction belt runs through)... take those screws out and flip them around, putting the nut on the OUTSIDE. That will allow your traction belts to slip on through and you can get in as small a tree as you dare now. I've been in some so small I wondered if they'd hold me up -- but it's where I needed to be for that location.
Always make sure you get the angle right before climbing. Nothing like reaching height to find your platform is angled down. Anyone found a way to adjust this at height or on the way up with the hand climber, please chime in. I could do it with the sit and climb, but have not figured out a way to do it with the hand climber. Get you a Summit or LW saddle bag pouch and attach it to the frame of your seat on the front. Handy as a shirt pocket.
In a pinch LA...put your hand portion low near your base kneel on the top portion and adjust. Just make sure you're secure before attempting it.
Yeah, that is the only way I can see it being done. I am always secured, but monkey business in a tree spooks me at times.
Easiest thing ever, LA... One of the BIG reasons I love this stand! Just reach out and hook your heel over the front of the stand with one of your boots. Lift it up to take pressure off the traction belt and reach down to undo the clamp. Pull excess belt through and re-clamp. Do it all the time as I climb trees that are extremely tapered on one of my properties... could probably do it in my sleep.
Thanks for the tip.. i was as well wondering how to tighten the strap as you climb.. I could have used this this evening ... love it when the platform is angled down ..
I have the Strap version and forgot all about it. I like using it sometimes. Sometimes I don't. I think I will put it in my pouch for the leveling procedure. Thanks for reminding me Jeff. Now where did I put that dang strap?
I love my lone wolf handclimber. My routine is probably standard but a couple of tips that I have found to make your stand better. I use the Gray Wolf Woolens straps, they are the most comfortable on the market. Also, on the bottom section of my seat I have a black bungee cord, not one with hooks on it but the small stuff like what is on the outside of daypacks or backpacks. Sometimes it is called shock cord I think. It has a plastic cordlock similar to what is on the waist strap of a jacket or again a backpack. I use this to hold an extra layer or jacket. It carries on my stand when I hike in and will also hang underneath my seat out of the way when I am hunting. When I need it, is right there under me. Also I used different packs along with my stand, Lone Wolf Wolf Pack and others. The Badlands Monster Fanny works great when carrying my lone wolf climber or hang on with sticks. I know you'll like your lone wolf, there is not a better stand in my opinion. Also on a side note, sounds kind of goofy but I installed small pin lights in my fanny pack. I can turn on my pin light and see what I am trying to get to in my pack in the dark. Real handy and the light stays pretty much contained in my pack. I know some say deer don't mind lights but I don't want to be sitting in a tree prior to hunting shining a light even if its small.
Thanks for the info Trout... thats kind of more what im looking for. I know this stand has been around a while and im sure there are more tricks out there. Im just trying to get all the info i can to hopfully make my trips into the woods a little easier. I ride my Mt.Bike back to my stand and im also learning how to pack using a bike... its pretty difficult trying to make everything fit/work so you can ride. Thanks again
