Hello, I have been out of bow hunting for 9 years and am just getting back into it. I have 3 lock on stands, non-adjustable, for leveling. Is there a simple way to determine whether a tree is unusable from the ground?? I remember trying a couple of times with my lock on stands, using screw in tree steps, and finding after I reached the top that the tree had too much of a lean for me to be comfortable in the stand. Very frustrating to spend the time and effort to only find out the tree wouldn't work. I wound up purchasing a Summit Viper and using it exclusively but would like the option of setting up a few of these lock ons for future hunting during the season. So, are there any options, answers to my question or should I just use my climber this year and pickup some adjustable lock on stands after the season? Thanks for any help you can provide. I feel your pain. Lone Wolf and Muddy are the best route to take in terms of portability. I own both and can't really tell you a difference other than price. Lone Wolf is a little lighter but built like a tank. Check these two brands out online to find a model to best suit your needs.
Hey, I appreciate your reply very much. I was beginning to think that I am the only one in the country who has crooked trees After buying a new crossbow and related equipment recently I'm thinking that I'll have to use my Summit Viper for this season and look for some quality, adjustable, tree stands after the season. Or, who knows, there might be some great bargains for used tree stands!! Nick
Honestly, just look at the tree better, sometimes looking at it from a different angle can help see if it leans one way or another. I grew up hunting with a loc on limit stand that weigned 6.5- 7 pounds with no self leveling. I had no issues with it but sometimes you get a little lean of the tree. I always tried to setup on the side so you lean back a little then. I would try to find a group of 2 or 3 trees and then put your hang ons in the middle of them.
I got all my Lone Wolf gear on Ebay used but like brand new for dirt cheap. My muddy gear I slowly accumulated over time until I got enough quick sticks to hang 3 stands 18-20 feet up.
Thanks for the good advise. I'll take my time as you suggested. Certainly no reason to be in a hurry. Nick West Virginia
those pics from me this morning on a curve tree, one of those with 3 trees coming out from the bottom. Crocked tree, with Branches and I was able to set up on the dark this morning here in SC. The lone wolf works great. I don't need to hunt for a tree for an ambush point, I actually look for the ambush point and set up almost on any tree I can find. Wow !! Those Lone Wolf stands are really impressive. Do you also use the Lone Wolf climbing sticks?? Nick West Virginia
Yes. There are pics of it. Also this season I am using a turkey vest instead of a bag, so far I am loving it and everything is attached to me. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
