This large 7 x 7 bull elk was struck by a vehicle about 5 miles down the highway from our bar yesterday in the very early morning hours. The DNR had it loaded up before 8 AM to take it for examination. No one claimed to have hit it and only a piece of plastic was found at the scene. Supposedly there were no skid marks. I was told that this bull elk was the the third oldest in the herd. This is the herd in Jackson county. **This is all second hand information that I have been told. However, it is a shame to see an animal of this magnitude go this way.

I don't think so but I'm not sure about that. The elk does not look to be all that busted up did make it about 100 yards off of the road into the alfalfa field. It is kind of amazing that a vehicle could hit an animal that size and drive away.

Ouch - that sucks. Shame to see all that delicious meat go to waste.

How much meat get harvested off elk that size? A mature elk is my bowhunting end boss.

Definitely wasn't a hunter, thousands of dollars damage to vehicle and not take the head or back straps at least. Beautiful bull, dream of hunting something that big.

That's a shame. I didn't realize that Wisconsin had an elk population until recently.

That is a shame. Do you see elk often? I travel in your area occasionally and haven’t seen one yet. Saw a nice bull elk in the northern heard (Clam Lake) a few years ago though.

I don't see them often but that's because I don't travel where they frequent very often. I do know a few spots where to go look for them. A few of our customers have them hanging out on their land.

Just speculation on my part. I once had an elk run into and then under the trailer on my big rig. Felt a slight thud. Got to were I was going and the only damage was to the spare tire rack and I needed to stop by the local truck wash and do a little spraying. Pretty consistent marks here of a big rig sideswipe.

Greg...nice to meet and talk some hunting with you last weekend at your bar while I was in your area hitting the ATV trails. Be sure to pet MF Jones for me. ;)

    Good luck this season!

    -Todd

*To anyone in the Milston-Black River Falls WI area..... be sure to stop at Greg's bar called The Buck Stops Here. A lot of great mounts on the walls and ice cold beer.
