In the blind, decoys are out, now just waiting for the sun to come up. Good luck to anyone else out chasing a thunderchicken today...
Killed one yesterday evening heading to roost, currently setup waiting for daylight on a farm about a mile down the road.
Opening morning. Not much for strutting going on where I am at. Luckily I got permission to hunt a food source that gets hit most mornings and evenings. The land owner shovels the horse crap out the back door of the barn and the birds come to pick through it. Dads up to bat first with the crossbow. Bring on the birds!
Just got back home. Saw one and could not tell what it was, only showed itself for a few seconds. Riled up some birds right away this morning with a few hen yelps but they never showed. The land owner wanted to let her horses out for a few hours. She is going to shoot me a text when she gets the horses back in the barn in which we will decide if we have enough time to go back for the evening or wait for morning. Drove by a few other properties that I have permission to hunt but not much happening anywhere. All the spots I have permission to hunt are not holding much for birds right now because of the cold weather. All the birds are still in their wintering areas. Which up to this year I never had a reason to try and get permission to hunt. Like I had said this morning I got lucky with a more civilized part of town that holds the birds year round. (in lower numbers) They are really predictable because the land owner shovels out all the horse crap into an area that is about 10 yards by 10 yards. According to her they have been coming to that pile everyday for a couple weeks in groups of 6 to 15. Even with the land owner basically running scouting missions (the horse crap pile is 50 yards from her house) for me from the start of April we got beat by the birds! I will be on tapatalk this evening/tomorrow morning with more then. We have some rough weather moving in which I don't mind because the most active I saw the birds last year was on the nastiest day of the season so hopefully that will get the birds to the field to snack on some nutritious horse poop.
Dad stuck a nice jake, with the weather being the way it is and us not being able to get out after today together he decided he would shoot the jake. Can't figure out how to upload a picture that was previously saved to my phone, so I will post that either when I get home, or after my 11 o clock class.
I was talking about that with my dad, the landowner does not have bow hunters so we got the ok to do that this fall. I am going to sit just where I was today and try to stick a goose this fall. With what I saw today I could stick a deer, fall turkey, and goose in the same day with a little luck.
