Question; Why the hell would u be entering the woods with a gun, in full camo, with a blind on your back two hours before dark? He walks within 20 yards so I whistle so he sees me. He says sorry then walks right through the area I'm obviously hunting. I'm pretty hot right now. Still can't figure what he is hunting for starting now.
Last night i saw a buck off to my right coming through the woods heading up a ridge in front of me. It stopped on a ATV trail about 75 yards away from me and i gave a bleat and it did a 180 and came running right towards me. I then saw it was only a 7 pointer, nice tall rack but it was just outside the ears. I let it mill around in front of me for about 5min and then i let it pass. That same night my dad who sits about 200 yards behind me heard a 2 deer jump a line fence behind him. He saw a doe come running about30 yards right by him with a 10-12 point 140 class buck chasing it. It happened so fast he had no chance for a shot. Then he heard another deer jump the line fence and here comes a solid 15 point non typical bounding towards the other deer. Again he had no chance because it happened so quickly but he said it was one of the most exciting times he has had sitting in the stand. Then this morning I had a nice doe in front of me, i drew back on it at 18 yards out and put the arrow right through both lungs, went 25 yards and died. I am currently cooking up some steaks from the backstraps right now. The deer are really starting to move, i am going back up north (buffalo County, WI) Wednesday night till sunday night to hope arrow a nice buck.
Ended up tagging a big old doe tonight. Heres the story. With those stout winds Saturday, I decided to do a little still hunting/scouting in the morning. I found a really tight travel corridor right next to the creek bottom, lined with a few rubs. So I came back to the same spot around noon today, hung a stand real quick, and as you saw in my previous post, I had a few come by at 3:35 pm. Just out of range, and it was still early in the day. About 5:15, the sun is really on its way down, and a few more does come out into the middle of the brushy island out in front of me. The slowly work their way towards me, and I decide that I should fill the freezer now because the next few weeks Im not sure how much Im going to be in the woods...unfortunate because rut is practically here. Anyhow, this doe is quartering very slightly towards me, so I get my pins tight behind her shoulder, and touch off my release. Drilled her, double lung shot, she runs about 40 yards, stops and looks back at me, then beds down and doesnt get back up. Ended up seeing 4 other deer from the time I shot her until I got out of the stand at 6:20, but I couldnt tell if any were bucks. Shes freakin old. Only a handful of teeth left, and Id say shes pushing 140-160 on the hoof. Doubt she would have survived the winter in the condition she was in, so a great management harvest. AND...my monkey is gone! Its been 7 years since Ive been able to hunt due to my military obligations, and this one feels real good! Hopefully I can get still get a good Illinois buck in front of me before the middle of January! Good luck ya'll!
Found the arrow. It was buried at the shot site. After retracing the shot with some friends help It appears that the arrow hit a small branch and deflected the arrow. One of the fletch was nocked off and found there. Better to have a miss than a lost deer or one running around with an arrow hanging out. I had spent about 10 hours looking for that deer.
Buck taken Halloween night at 5:55. After climbing into stands around 1:30, my buddy Skyler saw this buck rubbing on a tree 30 yards away. He ran in and out of the woods twice never giving a clear shot until he came back in and bedded down 40 yards away through thick timber. A few hours later Skyler got down to see if he could put a good stalk on him. Walking up to the hill he was behind took a solid 30 or 40 minutes. When he could see the buck over the hill through the brush (5 yards) the buck got up and walked around the brush, right at Skyler. The buck got within a few feet before taking off to the South. I later got a text saying to get ready, an, and a few seconds later a buck came through. Never seen this buck on camera, even though new deer are coming through every year, there wasn?t much of a decision to be made at the time. I was going to shoot. He stopped down wind but kept moving, he was straight to my left and at 23 yards I took the shot. We followed a deep blood trail 40 yards until it took a cut towards the river. There he was. All we had to do was cross the river and drag him up the bank to the edge of the field. I?d say he?s a great first deer. First deer ever. Not the biggest Buck. But I an happy with him. He is a solid 8. Hey. I'm 17. Ill have chances at bigger deer, but for now, he'll do. Everyone has to start somewhere. Treestand is top left of the picture. Roughly. Knowing what type of gun it was would help. I'd going to guess it was a shotgun though, and say he was probably turkey hunting or squirrel hunting. They're both active before dark and some people do the "sit and wait" style squirrel hunting. Turkey is probably the most likely.
Just got settled into stand. Hopefully this is the day. Only seen one deer on the drive here and he was a pretty good buck. Walking down the road between 2 marshes. Then just as I was about to my stand I seen a killer shooting star in the northern sky. Scared me at first, thought someone shown a flashlight down on me from a stand that shouldn't be there, it was that bright. Good luck to the rest of you venturing out today, put em down!
It's very warm out here today. I just had 2 spikers walk by at 12 yards. I just got in my stand about 15 min ago. My bro and I were a little lazy this morning. If these deer were 3 yrs older one would be dead
Excluding the sit with the neighboring property shooting guns, this is by far my worst sit of the year. Worst morning sit since an ice storm 2 years ago. Cold and windy, thinking about calling it a day. But it's the rut so in a tree I stay, only takes one deer
To finish your last sentance you should have added " than I can celebrate with a beer". That would have been some good hunting poetry.
Lol, I didn't even read it. Guess it did sound like a rhyme. Bunch of neighbor kids back behind me on their 4 wheeler, think I know why I haven't seen anything now. They're not riding, sounds like heading back to the house. Maybe they'll kick something up
