Did JZ connect with Dub? I have only been getting on to update this thread. Haven't been able to browse the forum. Lucky when I get enough signal for a quick post.

Good luck! I hope you can get him! Man this isn't helping me keep my mind off of elk hunting! Come on September 2016! Lol

I'm still rooting for you Ash. Our last day (for this unit) came and went with two cows spotted but no closer than 110 yards. We're twenty miles south of where we were hunting before and the elk are totally silent here vs. the northern area. A bit weird.

Well had another good encounter last night. Set up in a slightly different area a bit lower than before and waited for him to come down with his cows. He started rounding up his cows and I began lighting him up. Again same thing he came to about 60 but wouldn't come out of the thick stuff. Started throwing everything at him. Challenge bugles, calf calls, mews, finally got his cows headed my way and got one to 30 but even she didn't give me a clear shot.

I stopped calling and let her head back and made a move. I slipped down the drainage as fast as I could while remaining quiet. To no avail. I couldn't cut him off fast enough. I sat and watched him and his cows cross over on to private land along with a decent satellite bull in tow.

All I could do was watch and listen. The sunset wasn't too shabby either :)

Unfortunately my buddy got a call on Friday offering him a new job so today we are headed back to KS :(

The good news is there is a real good chance we can get back out in two weeks. Made a great new friend, spent time with an old friend, and had more intense encounters than I ever imagined we would.

For a couple flat landers going in DIY and blind and getting into not only elk but a FINE bull, staying in them every day for a week Id say it was a true success.

I learned ALOT and can't wait to put it to use the next chance I get.

Sure would be nice to be haulin home heavy coolers and a big rack. But I'm ok with that. Good friends, great times, and amazing mountains with screaming bulls..... I'll take it anyday.

My new found hunting buddy Seth. Expect to see him on the forums soon. If he stays out of the mountains long enough to log on :)

I enjoyed the vicarious hunt. Sounds like a great spot, I should go find that bull. heh. Western Colorado isn't that far away. ;)

Congrats to your buddy on the job offer, even tho' it cuts your hunt short.

We went looking for elk on the other unit. We saw some nice pronghorn bucks and shot some rabbits but the only cows we saw were the moo kind.

Awesome. Definitely worth the journey man. It makes the trophy that much more valuable.
